My 96 Cobra seems to have a small pan gasket leak. It has had Mobil 5w30 or 5w20 since 1998 for sure. I just noticed that Mobil's HM line is thicker based on the 5w30 oil having an hths value of 3.3. Does it just help reduce the leaks due to the viscosity being thicker? Or does it actually have seal swelling chemicals that other oils such as Amsoil 5w30 which has an hths value of 3.2; or RL 0w30 with 3.2 hths value as well but the VI of 183 (best of all three)don't posses? The three oils are extremely similar in operating temperature viscosity. Thus, why I'm asking if there would be a benefit of the M1 HM over the Amsoil and Redline in reducing a small leak or does it simly do it by thickening up the oil? Which can obviously be done by anyone by simply increasing the viscosity of the oil run.

Isn't the "oil for high mileage engines" more about marketing than about performance? Yes, in some cases an oil with a seal sweller and higher viscosity might be a help, but that certainly does not describe every high mileage engine.

Which could just be marketing hype from a company trying to sell their product.

I agree...usually; but I have to jack the motor up to do so in this case. Not really looking forward to that.

I know its not hype, I would never recommend something I haven't used myself. I wrote about my experience yesterday in detail on another post. In comparison to other oils too.

There are a couple of M1 HM 10w30 and 5w30 oil VOA within this site that show that they possibly have some of the more robust additive packages in M1 product line. As for the base oil? Know one knows. But as for marketing hype? I myself don't think so.

But M1 could have already change the M1 HM formula again by now!
Our 08 5.4L with 175K miles really seems to like the 5w30 formula.

Not true. Just because you can't see the additives (high calcium in the past) doesn't mean it's weaker.

Mobil's page listed the hm oils to have 1100zddp level. Voa and my uoa showed it to be barely in the 800 range. Tbn was lower than what Mobil said as well.

2 posters have testified (Ford 1/2 ton, 175,000 miles& 92 Camry 248,000 mi.) about their good luck with M-1 HM 5w30. Add my 96 Camry V-6 with almost 290,000 miles...and the engine is totally the original...valve cover gaskets have never been touched. Just returned from a trip of well over 1,000 miles (many of them 80 and 80+ MPH) on Mobil-1 10w30 (not even the HM version). The result? ZERO oil usage. The old car never uses any oil between changes, which range from 5 to 8,000 miles.
All versions of Mobil-1 are both loved & hated on this forum.
In less than 10 posts, 3 of the posters (including me) have given their experience with M-1 on high mileage vehicles.
While its usage may or may well not solve your problem, it is mighty good oil.

Ok, I'm sorry if I offended you. I was just saying I'm not one to necessarily trust what I read from a manufacturer as their advertisment. I do however trust what you have to say more.

+1

Search Bob Fout's voa's here. He did a ton of them. Very awesome of Bob to do that for us. My M1 Hm uoa is posted here as well which shows the weaker add pack, but it ran smooth as silk in my car and gave me an impeccable uoa.

No, not at all. I totally agree with that. Thanks!

I personally tend to trust company pds info(what little there is)more than voa/uoa's. I think of a voa/uoa as an info supplement to the pds.
Besides isn't Blackstone notoriously low when it comes to zinc & phos?
