SHAUN: No problems showed up in the initial sample from your GM 2.2L engine. All wear read easily below average levels for this type, which is a very good indication of normal wearing parts and careful operation. The universal averages show typical wear after 3,873 miles on the oil. Insolubles were low at 0.3%, showing good oil filtration. The viscosity was mildly low, but in the low 20W range, where many 5W/30s read. You have a remarkably nice wearing GM engine and we can see no good reason for not adding miles. The TBN was 2.9, low but still okay.

My take:

I have not worried in the past about using Quaker State Conventional oil. After this UOA, I feel even more comfortable.

THANKS for posting some data on regular QS oil! I have been using 10W-30 QS in my 2002 Trailblazer since about 1200 mi. I figure the 5W- and 10W-30 are probably very similar in additives.

Wow. QS looks/held up better than I had anticipated. Pretty good numbers to boot. Guess QS has been getting it together.

silicon is great, and so is wear.

I'd give the engine and driver credit for this UOA.

This UOA makes me feel better about this stuff.

I have Quaker State 10w-30 SL and 2 quarts of Exxon Superflo 10w-30 in the Previa right now.

Now where's that Nickel coming from, contamination?

How did you take this sample?

The oil is still a solid 20wt, about 8.8cst.

What type of driving do you do, how long are your trips typically?

Michael:

Good afternoon.

I do not have the knowledge or experience to know of the source of the nickel.

The sample was taken during the last oil change. I let the oil flow until the stream began to diminish, then I just placed the container into the oil stream until it was full. The container filled more rapidly than I expected and overflowed. So I poured a small amount out.

The Vue is driven daily by my wife. 16 miles to and from work M-F. First half of the trip to work is 65 MPH highway. Then the last half is stoplight-to-stoplight in a 30 MPH zone. We also use it for half of the weekend errands. A few times a year it is taken on interstate trips of greater than 100 miles.

I'm pleased to see this report because since my last oil change I am using 5W30 Quaker State dino in my 2004 Chev Cavalier with 2.2 Ecotec motor.
