I'm not quite sure what that's supposed to mean. Wix has been building solid, reliable filters for decades, nothing has changed. But they've got a few shortcomings here and there- namely comparatively leaky ADBVs in some applications. If you want the absolute Bugatti Veyron of filters, get a spec-built (usually by Champion Labs division of Fram Filtration) synthetic media filter branded as Royal Purple, Amsoil EAO, etc. Maybe .01% below that are things like Fram Ultra, Purolator Synthetic, and Wix XP.

Point being, brand name alone is not a good sole defining characteristic. Its construction, and that varies among model lines within brands, and even among different applications within model lines.

Yes, the cartridge filters I use (GM 3.6L V6 2011, & BMW N52 2007) are just fine in a Fram TG or NAPA Gold. I can't get the full synthetic media types in those applications. .... What do they make the synthetic media out of usually? Glass fibers and polyester (or similar plastic) fiber blends?

I've run into the same thing with the Pentastar and its cartridge filter. No wire-backed full-synthetic available. Purolator shows a part number for a synthetic cartridge for the first-gen Pentastar (PSL36135), but to the extent of my searching its totally unobtanium. As far as I can tell, it may not even be in production yet.

As for what they're made of- I don't know, exactly. But I think you're right, its probably a blend of fibers without any cellulose. Some filters are a blend of cellulose and synthetic (PureOne comes to mind), but the usual wire-backed full-synthetic stuff lacks the cellulose, and is both thicker and "fluffier" (lofted) compared to a cellulose-based medium.

I used to love the bang for your buck value of the PureOne oil filters, and used them exclusively on my car for the past 5 years. I would pick them up on sale, and I knew they were excellent quality. But because of all the tears I've been reading about, I just bought two Fram Ultra filters to use for now.

After doing some research I think I'm switching to Wix/NAPA Gold filters at least until I hear the Purolator issue has been resolved. It kind of pains me to say that, not because there's anything wrong with Wix or NAPA Gold filters, but because I used to get the PureOnes at a really good price, and they previously were of excellent quality. I really hope Purolator figures out the problem and resolve the issue quickly.
