Prudent maintenance or a waste of time?

As far as the maintenance being a waste of time I will just say I got 300K miles out of a 88 [5.0] Town Car and 200K miles out of 99 [4.6] Grand Marquis by doing basically nothing but Ford recommended service...When I sold the cars they were still running awesome and everything worked perfectly.

Lots of engines have mechanical lifters now, and it's not just the Japanese ones. Most of them are shim-over-bucket though, not jam nut style, so they aren't likely to need adjustment (but are a PITA to adjust if they do).
