I drive a 2004 Audi A6 with 2.7 biturbo engine. OEM oil spec is 5w30, API service SJ and ACEA A2 or A3.

I've been using Mobil 0W-40 as it is highly recommended for my application on the Audi World forum.

I live in California near San Francisco and coldest winter temp we get is just below freezing. Hottest summer temp is about 105F. The frecommended oil viscosities seem pretty low to me given my minimum ambient temperature. It feels like they would be right in winter for East Coast or Europe (northern - say Germany, etc).

I'm interested in best lunrication protection for engine, not best fuel economy. Given this, are there any clear advantages to running a higher weight oil, say 10W-40 or 15W-50 that meet the SJ/A2/A3 requirements.

Any advice/suggestions are appreciated.

I would use PP 5w30 for the turbo engine. Its shown to be a very shear stable oil. If you can find German Castrol that would also be a very good oil for your application.

Hi,
boostbuddy - You are uising one of the best lubricants made at any cost! For instance, M1 0w-40 is the only lubricant (viscosity) specified for the Porsche Cayenne Twin Turbo and for all AMG vehicles where it is the Factory fill

You are already getting probably the "best" protection available - the Audi guys know what it's all about!!

Regards
Doug

to BITOG.

Mr. Hillary knows his stuff and I could not argue with his recommendation.

Nice car.

That 0-40 M1 is great for turbos.
It is factory recommended by various Mfrs. for their turbo cars.
On a hot day when you are thrashing it, it may need the slightly heavier 0-40 - turbos get some VERY hot spots.
I am not against other fine oils, but in your case I'd stick with the M1 0-40.
