I found this on another website, but it is disturbing and, if true, very unfortunate:

When you go to the Napa store, ask them why Wix (everyone's filter hero here) decided to start producing "will fit" filters that do not meet OEM Ford specs for the 6.0. Then ask them if Fram is so terribly bad, why they repackage OEM Racor and sell them for $6 cheaper than the inferior Wix or Crappa Gold. Remember guys, things change daily. Wix also does the same with fuel filters for the 6.0 as well, skilled the aqua bloc media requirement.

Anyone here familiar with this situation? What gives?

As far as rebadging filters, everyone does it. Mostly on items that are to low volume to justify the costs of new production line tooling. The rebadbged item still has to meet the same requirements as in house products.

And why would you ask a NAPA counterperson what Wix is doing with Wix Branded Products?

This guy needs a grammer/spell checker.

Thanks Pete. That's what I always figured. I wonder what he means by "will fit" anyway? I'd hate to have a filter that was "won't fit."

This all stemmed from my recommending Wix among a couple other filters and telling someone to visit NAPA and ask to see their Fram filter display and they would never buy another Fram.

Some folks just love orange I guess?

"Will Fits" are filters that have many more generic applications than "built to fit" filters. Kinda like the replacement foam filters for window AC units, They will fit, but you have to do something besides just pop it in.

In oil filters this might mean thicker gaskets, wider gaskets, median thread fitments rather than specific tolerances, generic media etc.

Look at the number of applications "specific" to a filter, not the "will also work" but is longer, shorter, fatter etc.

TallPaul, no it does not meet OEM specs. Racor has a patent on the VT275 and the 6.0l powerstroke oil filter and oil filter housing. They have not released licensing on them. The only way for the filter to meet OEM specs is if it is re-packaged racor period. Wix started off the right way, re-packaging the racor, then decided to pull a cheap stunt on the unknowing 6.0 owners. They are now selling the same $10 filter that Champion labs makes which have already been proven to have drainback and non filtering issues, for $25. ... Anyway, their are only 2 filters that meet OEM specs. It will have the patent number on the bottom, either made in U.S.A. or in Germany, both of which are made by racor.

Next time you talk to this engineer, ask him why Wix switched?

Also, the "will fit" does not sound like the best option, but until I see one, guess I should not judge it.

According to an oil filter study posted in a thread here, the Wix version of the FL820 does not have a threaded end anti-drainback valve, which I always thought was a Ford requirement.

Anyway, the Wix 51515 and 51773 are great filters and fit all my applicaitons, so I will continue to use Wix. Though I do wonder about the items above. Whatever he says, Wix still makes great filters, just that for him, the other brand may be a better choice.

All lot of these counter people are idiots and have limited knowledge of the automotive field but they think they are experts.

I just went thru a week wait for a part for my old plow truck and everytime the part came it, it was the wrong item. Finally another person took over and lot and behold they had a part he was ordering in stock all this time. He did not know what a fan clutch was and ended up ordering everything attached to it but the part iteself. I suggested to the girl who got it right that she fire that guy but he was her father and owned the business.

I'm very surprised, with the vast diversity that WIX displays in a multitude of "marginally different" requirements (FL2005/FL300/FL1A/etc) , and given the market that the PS represents, that they don't have their own OEM spec'd offering ..or rebadging the OEM offering if indeed it wasn't going to produce it themselves.
