GDI engine with non - turbo in Georgia : Last year I ran M1 10W30 with no issues in the summer ... Nice low NOACK , on the thin side of a 30W and a solid performer.
During the winter I ran the PPPP 5W30 D1 Gen 2 oil also ran with no issues ... M1 is currently on rollback at WM so I'm thinking of running M1 5W30 for my summer fill and switching over to the PPPP 5W30 D1 Gen 2 for the winter . Conversely , I could just run one or the other all year long (Georgia) - the main interest for me with the PPPP 5W30 D1 Gen 2 is with the improved timing chain protection - all the other specs the M1 10W30 probably meets anyway (LSPI , etc.) which again I don't have a turbo in my GDI engine ... Your thoughts on what you would run ?

I'm a big believer in going with what it says on the oil cap. However, either would be fine. To me, if 5w30 is recommended, I can be choosy with the brand and not worry about the weight. I am a big fan of magnatec. Since my vehicles recommend 5w30, I might use Madeup Oil Super Lube 5w30 but not likely magnatec 10w30.

Either will be fine. The heavier base oils in the 10w30 help protect timing chains. It would most likely pass dexos1 if 10w30 was a dexos1 grade. The 5w30 is dexos1. Unless you’re in extreme N GA I’d stick with the 10w30 all year.

For a GDI engine with timing chain I would only use a Dexos1 Gen2 oil. The fact that 10W30 is not Dexos certified is a deal-breaker for me. As for Mobil 1 vs Pennzoil Platinum, I prefer PP because of the GTL basestock.

If you’re gonna “go thick,” then go thick properly with a non-ILSAC 30 weight or 40 weight. Otherwise run the d1g2 5w30.

mobil I extended performance year around in PA works for me. as noted the 10W starts with a 10 W base oil, 5W base oils require MORE viscosity improvers. this is for all fake synthetic group III oils, where as a 30W true synthetic group IV + V meets the 10W spec WITHOUT viscosity improvers hence the higher price!!! there are of course many other bennies!!!

Your Hyundai could care less of it gets Dexos approved oil or not. I run 5W30 year round in my KIA (same engine). Whatever 5W30 Blend or Synthetic that is on sale. Motorcraft 5W30 Synthetic Blend, Castrol GTX Magnatec, Quaker State Ultimate Durability.

This is complete hogwash.

What is the oil you speak of? This:

If I was looking for LSPI protection, which you are not, and timing chain wear protection, which you are, I would choose an ACEA A3/B3 or A3/B4 oil.

...and in all honesty, it couldn't "care less" if you used a quality Conventional either. The 2.4 calls for SM/GF-4 with a selection of viscosity to choose from. By all indication, the bandaid that is Synthetic Oil for combating intake valve carbon isn't working. Some get it, some don't, regardless of oil type.

Use what ever oil meets spec or better and enjoy the vehicle.

*Had a typo - meant M1 10W30 , not M1 5W30...
