Post your winter rubber!

Duratracs are great tires - especially on ice! I watched a guy with those climb a glare ice hill in the sun (super slippery) when all of the other jeeps were in the ditch!

I just wish they had a thicker sidewall

I finally bite the bullet today ---bringing in my fit to get a set of Hankook 4S to replace my already worn factory OE Dunlop SP37a/s (already dun for).

I'm usually leary about winter conditions here in PNW but sometimes, when things hit hard, a/s tires cannot do the job at all (all the curb hitting, slipping and sliding along the inclines, etc.) While I'm aware that these Hankooks may not be on par with true winter tires such as blizzaks or Toyo Observe, nevertheless: it's still better than my old Michelins P-metric I used to run on 323.

Wifey's car will be swapped with the usual set of winter 4s: mortarmeister's ole winter tire...they are fairly worn now so I'll be anticipating a new replacement set for next year, possibly either Marshal (by Kumho) or Hankook i-pike or similar (summer tires are still the Bridgestone Turanza serenity).

You know, I have no complaints with sidewall thickness...these tires have been on sharp rocks, cliff-edges, etc have not had an issue yet.

There are only a small number of a/t tires with 3-ply sidewalls; most of them are only 2-ply just as the Duratrac's are.

3-ply's are truly only needed for those that are heavily into off-roading, etc.

Basically, what I'm saying, is the Duratrac's sidewalls are no thinner then 95% of other tires on the market....there's only a 5% need for a thicker tire, thus that's why there's such a small market for 3-ply sidewalls.

The Cruze has a set of Nokian Hakkapellitta R studless snow tires. The Fit has a set of Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25 studless snow tires. Both work pretty well in winter weather. The Blizzaks turned the Fit into a little tank in the snow. Without them it's fishtailing at any speed faster than 35 mph. Fun in a parking lot, dangerous on a commute. The Hakka R's on the Cruze let it go up some really bad hills last winter.

The focus with studded Firestone Winterforce 185-65-15 ... don't care for the fact that they won't balance up.

I'll have ot get better shots. The wheels are gouged pretty bad (got them from a junkyard)

curious how you fishtail with a fwd car?

I figured I'd have the ws-70's on by now but welcome to ohio weather
with only 2 days even under 32F (for overnight low)
it would be pointless and squishy to put them on.

Blizzak LM-22 run flat tires in 225/45/17 mounted on BMW style 158 wheels on my parents' 2006 325ci.

This will be their first winter having snows on this vehicle. There's a side view of these combs on the vehicle in this thread.

It was 70* F here today, no kidding.

It was 60F at noon yesterday when the bird came out of the oven. 4 hours later it was snowing sideways and no longer comfortable to be outside in shorts and a t-shirt. Both my cars will be wearing their winter rubber sometime this AM.

The Fit has 70/30 front/rear weight distribution. It also has the rear wheels basically at the back of the car. Between all the weight over the nose and the rear wheels being almost as far back as they physically can be, there's little keeping the rear wheels in line when they lose grip.

The same problem was very real on the Saturn S-Series. On a snowy and windy day driving home from work on the secondary highways, a strong gust of wind made it feel like I was going to spin out into the ditch. Weight distribution has a huge part in making the car feel composed in poor conditions.

That was my initial feeling too, but for $390 installed for a set of four, I couldn't even find a China tire that came close in price. Even other junky tires were $100+ more installed. Tires have never lasted past 35-40K miles on this truck, so I wasn't going to spend over $600 on tires again.

After about 7K miles, I really can't complain. The only noticeable cheapness is a little bit of noise on really smooth pavement at highway speeds.

Well put the ws-70's on today.
was dropping from 65F yesterday on turkey day to 30F tonight with snow tomorrow.

next 10 days showing under 40F with below freezing nights finally.

now we need post your snowbrush/icescraper thread :P

We have a light dusting of snow today!

Also, kind of funny, but these tires appear to grip better on wet pavement than dry...
