My 95 saturn SW1 is still alive against all odds so I decided I'd change the 4 year old silicated green snot. Advance had a sale on Peak green, known world wide for its phosphates.

Incidentally the bottle says 95 and prior GM.

My saturn surge tank says phosphates are verboten.

Well what do you know, 48 hours and 4 heat cycles later it's leaking out the water pump.

Coincidence?

I think the signature line of "The Critic" is appropriate here....

I don't know, I have a 97 Isuzu that came with conventional green, it's antifreeze was just changed to Autozone green conventional over 3k miles ago, I'm not having any issues.

Also have a 96 chrysler caravan, it's antifreeze is conventional green, and it too was changed this summer, about 6k miles ago, not having issues with it either.

Yup. Plenty of cars run lots of miles on Silicated coolant. Including my 87 Ford with it's original WP and my 02 Jeep also on it's factory installed WP @ 140K

It's not unusual for a water pump to start leaking after a coolant change, especially if it was flushed. On a side note I have been running Dex-Cool in my 1989 GMC since 2000 with a add on Wix filter and have not had any problem.

I slapped a new pump in. Will cross my fingers in 48 hours!

Maybe the cavitation did it in from the drain and fill.

The leak was probably already there and simply plugged up with crud from years of neglected coolant.

Same with people who switch to synthetic oil on high mileage engines then complain about oil leaks. Apparently the muck and varnish was the only thing holding their engines together.
