Used motor oil will actually cause them to rust faster, something about the acids they contain...if anything, use new oil or used hydraulic/gear/transmission oil/fluid. I rustproof my truck using a mixture of gear oil and hydraulic fluid (and sometimes cheap new oil).
The one thing oil can do that epoxy can't is get into the cracks and between parts...other than that quality, epoxy and paint works just fine.
