Recently had my wife's 2012 Nissan Versa Sedan 1.6 SV w/approx 40k miles, oil changed at a local quick lube joint. (I know...I was being lazy) but anyways, upon getting the car home it started smoking A LOT out of the tail pipe, but was running as smooth as it always has. After a few times of doing this after start up it quit smoking. I googled this problem and I think it may have been overfilled. My question is: Is this harmful and has this done damage to the cars engine?

I'd check the oil level myself for overfill, and give the lube joint a call. Check the receipt too, maybe the wrong oil was used ? Overfill can be bad for the seals, PCV, and possibly worse, depending.

Most obvious problem that would cause smoking from overfill is oil sucked throught the PCV into the intake. I would want that cleaned up.....And NOT be the quick lube place. But.....At their expense. Good luck.

Start by checking the oil. I'd personally consider anything 1/4" or plus above the full mark to be a bit excessive.

Checked the oil level and it was around 1/4 inch over max. Was probably more because the oil change was a week ago.

I do not think 1/4" is an issue. But maybe it was 1" and most burned off.

They probably use the bulk hose with a quantity indicator. Maybe not even look at the dipstick. Maybe they did not change the filter but still added enough oil to fill the filter assuming it was changed.

Another example of why those quick lube clowns should never touch your car.

OR just find a better mechanic or quick lube place that doesn't screw up.

It's like saying you got food poisoning at one restaurant, so you never will eat out at any restaurant ever again.

Normally I do my own basic maintenance or go to an actual mechanic, its just this one time I didn't and that happened. But if I were to get food poisoning from a particular place I definitely would not be going back to that place. Likewise I will never ever go back to that quick lube place. Not sure if I'm supposed to name drop on here which is why I've been using the generac "quick lube place" name.

1/4" over max isn't going to cause it to smoke, that isn't that much overfilled. Take it to the dealer while it's still under warranty, it may need engine work.

But the ad I saw online said they had award winning training...

What is the size of your sump? I had a 93 Sentra. Sump was 3.5 quarts. Dealership put 4 quarts in every 3,000 miles for 75,000 miles. Then my mechanic overfilled it. So this may not just be a Jiffy Lube thing.

Well I've never used any of those places(company I worked for trucks were serviced) but if they are as bad as claimed here on BITOG you'd hear of problems every day... How many of those establishments are there, maybe 10 or 15,000 nation wide?? Servicing what a million or more cars a month?? Joe six pack likely screws up more often...

Back in 1997 I leased a new Mazda 626 and the dealership overfilled the oil quite a bit on the stick. I complained about it to them and they said it wouldn't hurt anything that it was just a little over. It was more than 1/4 inch over. They overfilled it every time.
