Our Sam's Club closed today

Maybe they are looking to 'rebuilt' new stores in a nearby city and want $_____ tax breaks for creating ____ jobs for so many years ?

Looks like about 10 percent of all Sam's Club stores are closing. There are or were about 650 stores. What I've read is 63 stores are slated to close.

We lost 2 Sam's here in Cincinnati, Oakley & Fields-Ertel, the Tri-County (Springdale), west side, east side, and N. KY ones remain open. Weirdly, the 2 that closed were in somewhat wealthier areas, esp. the Fields-Ertel one. Waiting for the shoe to drop on 4 or 5 WM Supercenters, we've got WAY too many. I haven't been a member for years, all the competition caught up with (& passed them) on price, and I'm sure Costco & Amazon are killing them.

Pure conjecture.

Here is a rather simple explanation from Walmart itself....minus all the negative opinions and sinister intentions outline in this thread:

Team,
Over the past year, we've talked about how our business must change in order to be positioned for the future of retail. We're committed to creating a new and better Sam's Club that offers more value and a great experience to our members. When I shared our strategy in October, I said we'd make the choices it will take to get there. Today, I want to share some important decisions we've made.
Transforming our business means managing our real estate portfolio — we need a strong fleet of clubs that are fit for the future. After a thorough review, it became clear we had built clubs in some locations that impacted other clubs, and where population had not grown as anticipated. We've decided to right-size our fleet and better align our locations with our strategy. We will be closing some clubs, and we notified them today. We'll convert some of them into eCommerce fulfillment centers — to better serve the growing number of members shopping with us online and continue scaling the SamsClub.com business. The first of these conversions will be in Memphis, Tennessee.
We know these decisions impact people we care about deeply — our associates and their families, as well as our members and their neighbors — and we did not make them lightly. A Sam's Club is a place of community and memories, and we are so appreciative of our associates who have worked hard over the years to serve our members. Our immediate focus will be on helping those impacted by today's news. We will work to place as many associates as possible in new roles at nearby locations, and we'll provide them with support, resources, and severance pay to those eligible. Many of our associates and members will move to nearby clubs. If you work in such a club, please make them feel welcome.
The steps being announced today will help us serve our members better and grow. We'll be able to invest more in eCommerce, remodels, and in-club technology. We'll also be able to lean into the areas members care about most, including fresh food, Member's Mark, and exciting merchandise. By narrowing our focus and simplifying what we do, we'll be able to provide better items, a better experience, and a more valuable membership. In the coming weeks, we'll share some exciting steps we're taking to become even more special to our members.
Change is never easy, but we're making these decisions from a position of strength. As you've seen in our recent quarterly results, our traffic and comps have improved, and that's because of the work you do to serve our members. We have momentum, and now is the time to accelerate our transformation efforts. Thank you.

I believe all or at least most of the IL closings are in Chicagoland. We have two clubs in STL metro east. One in St Clair County and one in Madison County and they are not closing.

Neither are any clubs on the MO side of the STL metro.

There are not Costco's on the IL side of the metro. I believe there are at least two in MO. The two I know about are about a 30+ minute drive from me.

The list I saw was 7 stores in IL. Six are in the Chicago area:

Illinois

501 N Randall Rd, Batavia, IL
21430 S Cicero Ave, Matteson, IL
6600 44th Ave, Moline, IL
808 S Illinois Rte 59, Naperville, IL
900 S Barrington Rd, Streamwood, IL
1055 McHenry Rd, Wheeling, IL
460 S Weber Rd, Romeoville, IL

I think all but Moline are in the Chicago area.

Considering the next closest Sam's are over 50 miles away and this is probably the fastest growing area in northern Arizona the Prescott Valley club just must have been under performing. It's nothing more than an inconvenience to us but to see that many people go to work and find out they have no job is sad.

The Sam's Club closing in San Antonio is smack in the middle of mostly residential area along a major traffic artery. However there is a newer Sam's Club about 7 miles away so if those 2 clubs are competing for the same customer base at the expense of overall customer traffic, it does make sense to close the older club.

Unbelievable lines today at the Sam's Club being closed here, I went to the Sam's Club nearer my house for the few items I needed to get there this morning.

We didn't buy a lot there but found the produce, especially the fruit to be better than any other food store available to us and we'd split the large packages of household necessities with daughter/SIL. Surprising, Prescott Valley/Prescott is a major retail center for a large area.

This will probably go political and get locked even though people know better but thought I'd report it. Has anyone else had a local Sam's close?

So what about memberships?

Will you get reimbursed or just the location of the next closest store?

The story on MSN.com says they'll refund the membership fee.

A Sam's corporate membership is a little perc from work so we've never tried Costco but it looks like we will.

It sounds like the employees came to work and were locked out. Nice.

That's a pretty standard way of telling people they don't work there anymore. Lots of times you hear stories about people going to work and their card key access doesn't work anymore so that meant that they didn't work there.

I heard a story once where that happened to a guy so he thought he was laid off so went home in a huff but it turns out that it was just his key card that was bad.

Umm, don't know where you've worked, but no, a Post-it note on the door isn't the usual method of telling employees that they're out of a job, nor is cutting off their key card access, although I suppose a few cowardly managers might use that method.
I work in a place where if an employee is fired, that must be done face to face, but we don't have any craven management staff.
In our business you can't be cowardly.

I'm waiting until my membership is close to being up before I cancel it. They have a 100% money back satisfaction guarantee for the entire membership period.

What I'm trying to find out is how they're going to handle their obligations with the tire and battery dept. Both my car and truck have tires from Sam's. I do have them rotated/balanced every 7500 miles and have had several flats fixed by them also and refuse to drive over to Flag for service. I was going to stop there yesterday and ask but, saw people 100 deep waiting to get in at around noon so, I went to Walmart to ask if they would taking over Sam's obligations. A manager told me they're waiting on word from corporate next week and thinks they will.

Illinois is taking one of the biggest hits here. When you look at the list of closures, no state has more. Sam's Club is closing 7 out of 19 stores in IL. Six are in the Chicago metro area and one in Moline.

They are only obligated if you are a member. If you let your membership lapse, they don't have to rotate, fix, etc.

Ours closed relatively locally too in Seabrook NH.

Feel for the workers but otherwise no loss to our shopping choices. I think Costco or Bjs eyeing the location just over MA border where shoppers love NH due to no sales tax.

It was pretty common in the tech field a while ago. They were pretty popular stories about it in the media for a while so I guess they may have gotten the message and stopped doing it that way.
