Last of the old style STs bought on clearance. OCI was 8K, 3K more than usual in cold weather. Spun on Napa Gold 1516 and put in ST SYN 5-30 HM. Second tear found during cold weather. You get what you pay for. V6 Tacoma 130Kmi
These torn filter threads always make me think my current filter probably has a big tear in it. With they could be checked before use. I've been buying mobile one filters being they seem fairly decent.
We have seen recently torn low end Proselect filters on here.... I'd bet this was not a sabotage deal... This is a legitimate failure if I had to guess.
Clogged thin media can only take so much thick cold oil and/or a large flow from a revved engine. That said, one filter never yet seen with any defect is the Toyota Denso. No tears yet seen on a German Mann, Mahle, Ultra, Boss, or Platinum, Denso, among others. It's good to know which ones do although I doubt one would tear with my very conservative driving style and over maintained engine.
To the OP, thank you for the cut and post. Your time and the contribution of valuable information is much appreciated.
When a filter success is posted, the authenticity of the anecdote is never questioned and the filter is celebrated as a hero.
But when a failure is posted, something different happens. Every aspect and variable of the anecdote is questioned and or blamed for the failure, except the filter itself.
Rather than intelligent discussion, we end up with a number of single sentence posts that aim to invalidate the information in some way.
This thread, takes it to a whole new level. A member went so far as to accuse the OP of tearing the filter himself.

I'm beginning to wonder if this phenomenon isn't a tad bit more common than we'd expect.
While not excusing the tear and understanding that OFs should be good for the vehicle manufacturers recommended oci, I'd say the ST here a ~5k mile fci filter. At least that would be how I'd view and use them. There was another recent anecdote of a jobber/value tier filter, a Premium Guard also run 8k miles, posted here. Similar type results, and as comparison my comments there similar. The unused PG looked fine as comparison.
As for this being Wix, more accurately it's a Wix 'made for' WM Super Tech, to their specifications. Much like Wix makes the Auto Extra filter to their specifications. Anyway, these STs are no more. OP could try the current ST equivalent made by Champ which uses a combo valve. It says rated to 10k miles. I wouldn't use one that long, but that's the rating.
It appears the OP decided an oversize Napa Gold this time. For a similar oci/fci, I'm thinking the NG/(Wix) a more appropriate choice too.
