With you on this one!

An that's the truth, I've used everything there is from 5W-20 to 10W-40 in seven different modulars without issue, one of those was supercharged 4v that only got M1 0W-40 while I owned it... One of the 2v got a steady diet of 10W-40 beginning around 80K mi when the valve stem seals began to fail(actually there were two a '92 & '93)... Sold the '93 to a friend at around 155Kmi, he repl the seals and it's soldiering on at near 200K mi... Dunno what went with the '92 as I lost track of that one after it was sold at 130Kmi(I'd repl seals on that one)...

Someone reported a retired taxi with over 700K mi that had only seen 5W-40... The reason it was taken out of service was his contract stated the vehicle could not be over 10 years old...

I used VWB 5w30 for the entire time I owned my 93 Crown Vic 4.6. No issues when it was totalled with 154k.

My dad has a 06 Lincoln TC with the 4.6. He uses whatever 5W20 or 5W30 that is on sale with a MC oil filter.
My 07 4.2V6 likes 5W30. It was spec'd for this engine in 1997. I also use 5W20.
I'm currently using Havoline 5W30 and always a MC filter.

I bought a 1995 Merc. Grand Marquis last summer with 150,000 miles on it (now at 156,000). The previous owner went to one of the local instant oil change places and changed to oil every 3000 miles using whatever they had on tap and the cheap oil filter. The car runs extremely well; there is absolutely no sludge and very little varnish on the engine. For this car, I choose oil and filter based upon price. Although I agree that the Motorcraft filter is excellent, I recently picked up a load of Puro Classics at K-Mart for $2.00 a piece. I have had no issues. I am currently running Kendall semi-synth 5w30 (2.59 a quart at O'reilly's). When that runs out, I have a stash of Valvoline Nextgen 5w30 (1.50 a quart on clearance at Walmart). I will then use my stash of Formula Shell 5w30 (1.99 a quart at Menards). I am sure that all will go well. Just keep your OCI reasonable, use SN oil, stay away from ecore filters and you will be fine. Keep 'em flying. Oh, and be sure to change your transmission fluid using Mercon V only.
