hello all,

I just purchased a newer car for my wife. I picked up a 2012 Honda Accord EX coupe I4. Our very first Honda auto. I stick to Honda for motorcycle and ATV though. Our car has 43,000 miles on it and since i just bought it i want to change the oil and filter to include trans filter and fluid also.

95% of the time i stick to maxlife 10/30 on all my vehicles and P1 filter 100%. The other 10% goes to castrol oil. I'll change the transmission fluid will be DW-1 and honda filter.

now getting to the question: I've used P1 100% the last roughly 8-10 years with good results. I know every filter can fail but i read one post about napa gold with great results. I might be changing filters. I want the best filter i can get for my newer car. As i read some of the post and look at cut open pics gets me thinking:

Rate the top 5 oil filters

thanks
BD

Your Accord uses 0w20, not 10w30. What OCI do you use? Do you follow Honda's MM suggestions?

Nothing wrong with the P1 you currently use

Best filters, in no particular order
Fram Ultra XG7317
Mobil 1 M1-110 (also Castrol CAS7317)
Wix XP 57356XP (also called Napa Platinum 47356)
Bosch Distance Plus D3323
Purolator Synthetic PSL14610 (also Bosch Long Life L3323)

Honorable mentions:
Wix 57356 (also Napa Gold 7356)
The P1 you're already using (and Bosch Premium)

FWIW, the OEM Honda oil filters are essentially Tough Guards

Look no further than the Fram Ultra. It will be the XG7317 model for your application. I read that you use Maxlife 10w30, however this car calls for 0w20 so you could always use Valvoline SynPower 0w20 if you prefer Valvoline products. You may also leave the Fram Ultra oil filter on for 2 oil changes as this is what Honda calls for.

Edit: Purolator oil filters have been tearing A LOT over the past year or so, I would avoid them period. Don't take my word for it, do some research and you will see for yourself.

No problem using 10w30 in that Honda. I wouldn't go to a 40 weight, but a little extra viscosity doesn't change much. alabama is warm

I use 10/30 in all other vehicles. but the Honda will only use 0W20
sorry i did not clear it up.

I've been reading and looking at post on here. does it really matter that some filters have pressure clips and some have springs that sit on top of filter?

slack: i change my oil every 3500 miles
Greg: I've been researching and that's why i brought up the question.
thanks

The pressure clips and springs don't matter. Whatever the filter mfr specs for your car will have what it needs.

3500 miles is absolutely a waste on these cars. You can safely wait until the MM tells you it's time. Well, maybe if it's a taxi or Uber car then I could see a short OCI

For 3500 miles, even the cheapest Chinese/Korean oil filters will work. Napa Silver would be my choice for a short OCI like that.

Changing a 0w20 every 3500 miles in an engine that will easily do 7500+ is a big waste. Are these models still specifying using the oil filter for two intervals on the MM still?

Current "best" filters for performance (cost not a factor) IMO:

1) Tie: Fram Ultra / Royal Purple / Amsoil EAO synthetic

4) Purolator synthetic

Factor in price and Fram Ultra moves to 1, RP/EAO tie for 2/3.

Mobil 1 is good, but not a full synthetic filter (needs updating if its going to try to remain a "premium" filter). Wix Synthetic is well made, but their efficiency numbers are ridiculously low compared to the other full synthetics. Not sure if that's real or a measurment difference, but for now I can't really bring myself to use one.

Given the OEM Honda filter is a low efficiency (like 66% @ 20 microns), high flow Fram Extraguard/Toughguard hybrid made to Honda's specifications and their cars still regularly make it to 200k miles and more...I'm not sure it maters much for an Accord!

These are all filters I have actually used, so there may be better ones but if I haven't used it then I won't rate it.

1. Fram Ultra
2. Mobil 1
3. Bosch Long Life/Purolator Synthetic
4. Wix/Napa Gold
5. Fram Tough Guard

Consideration would be given to AC Delco (non-Ecore) filters for standard OCI's

Keep in mind that a filter like the Fram Ultra is conservatively rated to 15k miles. So if you're doing 5k OCI's then you could use it for three OCI's. I got mine for $7.50 each so if used to its full potential it could also be the cheapest filter per mile of use.

wow! i appreciate all the responses. I grew up changing oil at 3000 miles in the late 70's with my dad. Its hard to get out of the 3000 mile mentality......I need to adapt especially with the maint minder this is all new to me. the newest vehicle that i own before the Honda was 03 ranger edge.

thanks

Agree.....3500 OCI is a waste of good oil, $$$, and your time. Extend to at least 7500 OCI and switch to a Fram Ultra filter witch can be used for two OCI'S (2 X 7500).

You might consider Mobil 1 ATF or EP 0w20 . IT's a top-shelf oil and well regarded by many BITOG's. Both the filter and oil can be easily obtained at Walmart at a reasonable price.

If you want the best you can easily find, go with a Fram Ultra. If you want an excellent filter at a good price, go with a Wix or NAPA Gold (NAPA Gold filters are made by Wix).

I was an avid Purolator P1 user, until the tear issue started showing up. I've since switched to Wix. I have no qualms with going back to the P1 filters, I'm just going to wait until the issue is no longer being reported.

It'd be better if he used Mobil 1 AFE than ATF

Napa Gold is the same thing as Wix! Also, Wix no longer makes CQ house brand filters. They switched suppliers before or during the AAP takeover, so Carquest filters are made by Fram/Champion, but supposedly they're not cardboard, but rather more like STP.

I think this is a good list. I might have put Wix/NAPA Gold at #3 and Bosch Long Life/Purolator Synthetic at #4, but I agree that this is a good filter rating list by BikeWhisperer.
