Oil change-Do it cold or hot?

I do mine after the vehicle has been sitting a while. I suspect that when the vehicle has been sitting for a while, enough time has been given to allow the oil from the engine to drain into the pan. This way, I get the majority of the dirty oil out of the vehicle.

coool

for you anal folks.......
after it starts to drip, do you guys jack up one the side of the car more to get even more oil out?

Sometimes....I wonder how much dirty oil is still left inside the engine ?

The really anal ones pour another quart through the engine with the plug out!

Don't ask me how I know.

But it should be done hot, or at least warm. You guys doing it cold are subjecting the engine to the worst possible start up wear scenario.

Yes.

I don't have to, my drain plug is at the back of the oil pan. When I'm on the ramps all the oil goes back to where the plug is.

How so? Documentation? Maybe I'll learn something this morning.

Like I said, I've done it both ways, never had a problem either way.

curious myself ^^^^^

if i am doing a uoa, i will do it hot. If not i will do it cold, not too worried about it

It is no different when you park your vehicle overnight, and start it again.

Park vehicle overnight -> oil drains to pan -> start engine.
Park vehicle overnight -> oil drains to pan -> change oil -> start engine.

Guilty as charged

What matters most is that we change the oil regularly at specific interval. I know of ignorant ppl who rarely change their oils. I dare not imagine the conditions of those poor abuse engines.

Same thing on my Mazda6 V6 Duratec.

Thats what I did when I had a Garage. I always opened the hood put a note on my steering wheel that the oil was drained so that I would start the engine if I forgot I drained to oil.

Now, since I don't have a garage, I let the engine cool for about 1 hour before changing. The oil is still hot and will burn, but it isn't scorching hot. I think this allows most of the oil to drain back into the pan, and still allows any oil contaminants to stay in suspension.

You should install one of those remote filter mounts by Amsoil.

I change mine hot or at least warm, but I guess on a daily driver it doesn't make much difference anyways, as the car is used often enough that contaminants have no time to settle.

But I don't see any benefits in trying to get the last drop of old oil, to me it doesn't make any sense, as there are plenty of nooks and cranies to hold oil no matter how long it drains, so I leave the drain plug off until I can see a drop every 5-10 seconds.

Just yesterday I changed the oil, it was -2C, the car was wormed up, I let it drain for maybe 5 min. put the drain bolt back on and put 4qts in, I then transferred old oil into the old 5qt oil jug, the amount drained was about 4.25qts. I checked the dipstick and it's slightly below the full mark, so 0.25 or less should bring oil level back to full.

To be honest it's really not that bad getting to the filter. I'm the only one that changes it, so I know it's not overtightened, and I put a little tin foil around the exhaust manifold, so I don't get burned.
