Oil change-Do it cold or hot?

was curious which way do you do your oil change?
when it is cold and majority of the oil is in the pan or when it is hot and still flowing to the pan?

i've always done it hot, but my last one i did it cold and it drained more because i added almost 4 quarts of oil when i normally put in 3.75 quarts.

I usually plan my oil changes after I get home from a drive when its hot. It does take alot more time but what I do is I remove the drain plug and let that drip into the pan while I check my differential, transmission, coolant, clutch fluid, brake fluid, psf. Then I gather my materials, my funnel, my new oil I remove the old filter, remove the dipstick wipe it, and by then most of the oil is out.

I change mine hot, but i usually do it at night after i get home. Just pull the truck in the garage, yank the plug and let it drain / drip all night.

Install filter and refill next morning.

As hot as you can stand. That's one thing they do right at Iffy lube, dump your oil right after you drive in. (though they probaby put the plug in before half a quart drips out

I take the car for about a 10-15 minute run, drop the plug and give it about an hour to drain.

Do it hot, that way any contaminates are suspended in the oil you drain out, not settled at the bottom of the pan.

On my Ford Taurus w/ Duratec, I do it cold. The oil filter is between exhaust piping...no way to get it out without burning yourself.

On my other cars, warm or hot.

I usually do it hot, BUT, if I pull in on the ramps and let it sit overnight, I will drain it in the morning when cold. All the oil has drained out of the engine and the flow will carry any contaminates out of the pan.

I've done it both hot and cold, nothing bad happened either way, so do it whichever way is more convienient for you.

One thing I do is wait at least 30 minutes or so before I take off the oil filter cuz the way the filter is mounted on my truck, oil runs down my arm every time without fail, and I'd rather not have it be super hot.

Hot. Usually is pretty close to done draining after about 2 beer cans hit the trash can.

This is the No 1 reason why I always do my own oil change.

I usually do it hot, pull it up on ramps then let it sit for 10m so the exhaust and such can cool off and not burn the hair off my arm.

Hot, usually after a drive a few miles, and i let the car sit for about 10-15 min that way the exhaust has some time to cool.
