Changing your own oil is usually great to do. That way you know its done right. Too many bad stories of some young tech messing something up at quickie-lube shops, etc.
Also, used oil can, and must be, recycled for free when you take your used oil to Walmart, Autozone, etc., any place that sells motor oil has to take used oil (in most states that is).
