I wouldn't be babying it the first 1000 miles. But let the engine and trans and rear end get hot, then drive it like you stole it for a while on some trips. Get out on some rural roads (and scout them before running it wild).

Also, you need to check the oil at least 3 separate times after the 15 minute wait period to get an accurate reading. Not just a one and done at the gas pump.

There is a chance that you are overfilled. Can you check the oil level after the truck has been sitting overnight?

^ this before it's too late.

I called the dealer I bought it from (1 hour away by choice, better dealer) and explained it to the service manager today, gave him all the details. Said I'll gladly bring it to them instead of the local dealer IF we can do this right and not waste my time. He understood and said he'd run my notes by a tech today and call me back.

Yes I checked the oil twice, after it sat for an hour and then another half an hour, then checked it the following day again, before filling.

I stuck my hand in the white startup smoke this morning and pulled it away, smelled like oil. That's what led me to call the dealer.

I'm fine if they want me to drive another couple thousand miles to track it, but I suspect this is more than will just "heal" by break-in.

Hah! There's a TSB on it, mentioning more than 1 qt per 3000 miles, though the dates affected have already passed as written. TSB 17-2077.

Just looked up the oil capacity on Amsoil's chart and it appears to be 6 qts. for this engine. So at least it has had 50% of the capacity replaced with new, fresh oil on the bright side.
