I know many here say that M1 is a little louder then other oils in the valvetrain but in my 04 Toyota V6 its loud. I've used valvoline and amsoil 5w30 and they were much less noisey on start up and idling.

Same with my engine. Especially during startups and idling... Mobil 1 5w30 was really loud. Amsoil and GC are considerably quieter for some reason. I think this is because Mobil 1 5w30 is a thin oil.

I bought a '97 Bonneville with the 3.8 V6 in '99 with 60K on the odometer. It was a fleet car so I expect the oil had regular changes. The oil cap is labeled 10W30. I switched to M1 10W30 and have probably changed it too often at twice a year and average 6600 mile OCI.
The engine is quiet, runs smoothly, performs well and is exceptionally frugal on gas. I usually have to add one pint more oil every 2k miles. The car has 145K miles now.

Is this the newer M1 or the older? The newer M1 is thicker than the older. I think this is all a matter of the oil viscosity. Nothing especially bad about M1. The old M1 was thiner than a lot of dino 10W30 oils.

I've not tried the newer, thicker version of regular M1, but the old stuff made the engine in my wife's GTP sound like a diesel.

Does GM realize how much of this crap is going on? They really need to redo every V6 and V8 that they make outside of the Atlas Inline series. Whether the engine lasts or not, we should not have to tolerate gas engines that sound like I'm shaking a coffee can full of assorted silverware.

Tell them what's in your wife's car now.... and how it sounds.

Well I certainly don't think all their engines suffer from extra noise...

Especially when several of their engines (3800 Series, and others come to mind) have been on the Wards 10 top ten for several years consecutively. Their atlas series of engines is the newest to appear on that list.

Well that would be "gold" German Castrol Ow30! It's quieter now than it's ever been, and it runs smoother to boot!

I've been running M1 Ow40 in my LT1 Formula, and the engine isn't loud at all at any time. It sounds just fine to me.

Observation here.....I am convinced it is the film strength of the oil and not the viscosity measurments etal that impact the "noise"....case in point....Buddys 327 Camaro....40 weight Mobil1 (0-40)...rattle clickety clack....30 weight Redline....smooth.....so just adding viscosity weight or taking it away may not be the proper mindset to address "engine noise"....In my own engines I have noticed a much quieter operateing motor with the Royal Purple lines....and of course they trumpet their film thickness to all that will listen...

The cSt values you've quoted are for the new SM formulation. Prior to that, Mobil 1 5w30 was in fact a thin 30...10 and 56 IIRC. The thinner formulation was perfect for my needs, that's why I'm cutting the SM with 2 qts of 5W-20.

Ran M1 Syn (various vis) in my Toyota for years and it always made a heck of a racket. Never thought to much of it until I switch to dino for an RX treatment and she is much quieter.

Say what you will, there is a difference.

So it is common for GM engines to sound like a diesel truck? My 2004 Sunfire sounds like a big ole diesel on startup and has some rattling/diesel like noises when I'm going 70mph on the freeway.

I had the dealer look at it and they said it was normal for this engine.

Mobil 1 really brought out those noises. I can still hear them with GC Gold but it is definitely much more quiet.

Superglide, I'm using M1 5w30 in a Toyota I4 and a V6. I have less noise. I did change filters to a Pure1 on the 2000 avalon and a WIX on the 99 Camry.
