ON, Canada eh?
So in reviewing a UOA I and talking with Terry, we were suspecting that I might have a slight problem with my EGR valve as certain things were showing up in the oil. I go out the garage and get my trusty technical manual and look in it and only the 4 Cylinder and the 3.5 litre V6 have EGR's not my DOHC 2.7 !

Manual specifically states: "The 2.7 Litre DOHC model is not equipped with and EGR valve"

I was surprised because I have seen EGR's on almost every vehicle that I have worked on...

Anyways, because it doesn't have one this negates the higher than usual readings that were found in the oil sample and means everything is bang on and operating 100%.

Just thought I would post for an interesting discussion.

That's an awesome thing Stevie! GM Ecotecs don't have EGR, nor do the Atlas/Vortec 4,5 and 6cyl to name a few. Modern engines w/out rely on small amounts of valve overlap to reduce oxygen content in the cylinders when needed to reduce NOx.

Stevie,my 2001 1MZ-FE Toyota 3.0 motor has no egr either.Besides, egr`s are a pain in the butt anyway.

my 91 BMW M42 1.8L 4-cyl (one of the most advanced 4-cyl engines for its time) has neither EGR or PCV. It doesn't mean that the crankcase gases aren't sucked into the intake - they are. There is plumbing to do this.

No pcv valve,I dont know if I like that part.
Some cars just have breathers that breath into the air intake of the engine. 1.9L Ford Escorts are like this and get on just fine.

I wouldn't like it if there's no form of positive crankcase ventilation. But there are alternatives to a PCV valve- Jeep 4.0s haven't had PCV valves for years, they used a fixed orifice instead of a vacuum-controlled valve and the system is called "CCV" (closed crankcase ventilation). It is still a form of positive crankcase ventilation in the broader sense, just not in the strict definition of a "PCV" valve.

And the 4.0's go a very long time on dino oils and the UOA's generally show they are very easy on oil so IMO that system works just fine..

I was just shocked... Must be spending too much time around Chrysler's...

Happy it doesn't have one... One less thing to replace later on.

That's not uncommon any more. Lots either don't have a valve, or have one that is integrated in the manifold and is not servicable.

I still do not understand as to why you are happy if the oil analysis is showing stuff in your oil which should not be there. If absence of EGR valve is causing your oil to become "contaminated" (as determined by the analysis), are you OK with that?

The oil isn't contaminated and was suitable for continued use, it was just showing "watch" levels of NOX, which are now explained as being an OK level for an engine that doesn't use an EGR.

Still extremely well within limits...

49-state 91-94 1.9L Ford Escorts/Mercury Tracers don't have EGR either. They do, however, have the wiring plugs for the sensors, which could be a bit confusing if you didn't know they weren't supposed to be connected to anything.
