Hi guys
My mom has an old Wizard brand cheapo push mower about 30 yrs old.It has a briggs engine and has not been started in over 8 yrs. I was fooling around in her garage and thought I would try and see if it started.Put in fresh gas and on the second puul it fired up !!
My question is how much oil does this engine hold.It does nt have a dipstick so I am going to drain out the old oil and put in new but I have no way of knowing how much.
My mower holds 1 qt at home and it is a newer briggs. Is this a standard amount for small engines?
Thanks for any help.

You would really need to identify the engine model and then look up oil capacity on B&S website or just contact them if you can't find it. Strange that it has no way of checking the oil level though...

FYI, my 2-year old mower with B&S engine (190cc) takes about 20oz if I'm not mistaken.

It mat be the screw in type at the very back of the crankcase. And if your mower at home is a 21inch walk mower you might want to check your oil level. One qt is too much for a walk mower engine. Would be somewhere between 18 and 24 oz, and more than likely is 18 oz on both units.

The oil cap does not have a dipstick on it I guess it broke off at sometime.I will look and try to find some sort of ID # on it .The mower is pretty rusty. The funny thing is,it runs better than my newer one.
Thanks for the quick reply

You guys must be pretty young. Back in my youth all B&S engines only had a small screw in oil plug located were the crankcase splits from the main block. To fill you just add oil until it will not take anymore.

My mower at home came with a bottle of oil from the factory. It might not be a full qt but I refill it to keep for oil changes. Thanks

That old of an engine most likely would not have a dipstick. There should be a screw in plug right on the crankcase, and what you did was simply fill it until the oil quit running out and called it good. ( with the engine level, of course )

I wish I was young again. But you did jog my memory about that oil plug.I will look for it.
Thanks

It's usually white plastic with two 'fingers' sticking up to grab on to.
There's a slip in the casting under that plug; fill to the top of the gap.
Simple.
