Nissan Profitable Again

Having lost a well maintained 03 Altima 2.5L engine (thus vehicle) prematurely to a known by Nissan fatal flaw, pre cat failure, I've got no love for Nissan.

That said, I have no problem with them reporting profitability now, especially if it proves fugitive criminal and former Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn to be wrong in his propaganda regarding Nissan failing now. 'In my observation and experience', it was under Ghosn that Nissan quality and reliability took a major turn for the worse, 02-03 Altima one example.

As for how long is been since the noted failure, when it's ones money and investment involved, not easy to be so cavalier about its loss. My .02
If it was an '03-it must have been some time ago-I assume. It's silly-IMHO to not to assume products improve, the same parts are even being used, etc., 20 years later. Yea-we are a more mature group on here-we can sure hold grudges for ever...can't we?

We used to have a guy that would complain in every Chrysler thread about his 1965 Dart! Nineteen-sixty-five!
When I’ve been down south I’ve encountered scores of people who think a 60’s era car isn’t an old car, it’s not like it’s a model T.

Guy was ticked because I called my 82 diesel suburban old (in 2012) and he just bought a “new” car a 1965 Lesabre
He had never owned a car that new before.
Had a new engine and transmission with a clean body.

It seems to be the American versions that have issues. Our Juke with a manual trans has been great. I think it’s a Spanish (Renault) and Mexican hybrid. In Mexico the less luxurious manual Nissans seem to run for ever.

Operative word, manual transmission
If you get a Nissan with a manual, keyed ignition and roll up windows and hand locks everything lasts forever.

I don't know who "we" is, quite frankly don't care. Yes, 03 was 2003 obviously, purchased new. Re-reading my post I don't see where I posted a single word about 'Nissan quality not improving'. So that point is nothing more than a strawman.

'For me', because I lost a significant amount of money on the vehicle because of a known by Nissan design flaw, I will never purchase another Nissan. That's not same as saying Nissan quality may or may not have improved. 'For me' it's called, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

If that's holding a grudge, so be it. As it's my money I can easily live with it.

The generation of Altima after that one was the most infamous pile of garbage that completely destroyed Nissans reputation.

Yea-it's holding a grudge.

This. Way overpriced with old-school Tundra-level gas mileage. I considered one until seeing both of those. Sad. The wife's 2021 Altima is a fantastic car.
Overstickered for sure, but not overpriced in practicality. My 2017 Titan was somewhere around $26K rolling off the lot.
As far as gas mileage goes, nothing with a 5.6L V8 is going to get good gas mileage. There’s no way to not pay some sort of penalty for truck aerodynamics and large displacement.

I've only ever owned two Nissans and both were good trucks. My buddy bought a brand new Versa in 2009 (not the CVT) and it has been an excellent car. Enough so that he went back to Nissan for a new Titan in 2018 when he was ready to buy a truck. He kept the Versa around and others in the house drive it regularly. Aside from a couple of sensors the car has been very reliable. The Titan hasn't needed anything repaired as of yet either. At one time, I would have considered Nissan to be nearly as reliable as Honda and Toyota. I know that isn't the case anymore but I'd love to see them live up to that again.

It seems like the US market has the less desirable brands like VW, Nissan etc selling a lot of their vehicles at MSRP. VW had best sales year in a while ever in 2021 due to other makers not being able supply.

The Rogue variants are top selling.

I remember when the 2002-2003 Altima was new and was touted as IIRC the fastest front wheel drive car on the market. I remember test driving one and thinking that while it was pretty quick it was very rough around the edges as far as build quality and the materials they used. On the other hand the 2002 and 2003 Maxima was a pretty incredible front wheel drive car all the way around, I was so thoroughly impressed with everything about that car and the only reason I didn't buy one is because I didn't get around to getting the one I wanted soon enough before they all sold out.

After MY2003 Nissan started going in a completely different direction with both cars and I completely lost interest. I have no idea what they were thinking with the redesigned 2004 Maxima which I thought was embarrassing compared to the most excellent version of that car that was made in the two model years prior. The Murano is the only vehicle that I thought was at all compelling since then but it is typically outclassed by its competition despite being a very solid vehicle.

Did I ever tell you guys about my 2017 Nissan Frontier SV 2.5 with the 5-speed manual gearbox? The first time I went to clean my windshield the fluid pump didn't work. The first time I went to blow my horn the horn didn't blow. At the 1.5 year mark the battery went dead with a bad cell and the paint quality on this thing looks like Billy Bob painted it with a paint can from Ollies Discount.

The washer pump was never hooked up from the factory - self diagnosed and repaired.
The horn, a dual tone design, was dead on arrival - self diagnosed and self replaced.
The battery was the cheapest junk they could buy to last the 12 month warranty. It lasted 1.5 years and was self replaced.
The fan clutch bearing died at the 2 year mark allowing the cooling fan to flop around. The noise triggered an investigation which allowed me to catch it before it caused any damage.

The transmission is by far the worst shifting manual gearbox I have ever owned... and I used to own a Ford 8N tractor. That speaks volumes!!
The fuel economy of this worthless 2.5 liter rattle trap engine is only 22 MPG highway. It doesn't make enough power to get out of its own way and it is actually dangerous in certain situations.

These things are JUNK. The customer service is JUNK. Nissan ownership is like playing Roulette - you pick your color and take your chances.
NEVER EVER AGAIN will I spend my hard earned money on this garbage.

Parking brakes out of adjustment from the factory.
Shock attachment hardware left loose from the factory.
Obviously not a single speck of inspection done during the dealership PDI.
Encyclopedia volumes of excuses from everyone from the shop janitor to the corporate CEO about how these were one-off errors and yet the internet if full of stories just like mine.

So be advised if you dare trust the propaganda of Jalopnik and their sales tactics. All that glitters is not gold.
