I have been quietly reading this forum for at least 2 years now. I finally made an account so I can share my experiences. I worked at a Pennzoil lube center during college for 2 years. I currently drive a 2004 Ford Taurus w/ 3.0 Vulcan and it likes MC 5w20. I was skeptical of the 5w20 craze but after running MC 5w20 for over 20,000 miles in my car I am happy with it. I just sent for a Blackstone test kit to test it during my next oil change. I can't wait to get the results and post them to be scrutinized by the people of this board.

Hello fellow Illinoisan! I'm a newbie, too, so you're not alone. While I don't have anything that requires a 5W-20, I've been very interested in lighter viscosities, too.
Anyway, welcome! And I'll look forward to seeing your 5W20 UOA's

Have any interesting/odd stories concerning your two years at a dino oil change/lube shop?

I could tell stories about people and their stupidity until I was blue in the face and still have days of stuff to talk about.

Ok....

One hot summer day, and I mean hot, this idiot customer who was a regular came in driving his beretta that was a rust bucket. I popped the hood and noticed a radiator hose was spewing steam from a decent size pin hole. I showed my buddy who worked there and we popped the lid on the coolant overflow tank. It was full of clear liquid. So we informed the customer who told us it was out of coolant so he added more water like the owners manual said. He had added at least 2 gallons of straight water and she was a boiling nice and hot. We told him take it on down the street that none of us were working under the car until he replaced the hose.

Also, I could not even begin to tell you the number of customers who literally think that if you do not have a cap on your valve stem that the air will leak out. These people would bring a car in with only 3 tires having a valve stem cap and come back a day or two later and accuse us of stealing their valve stem caps. This would literally happen at least 4-5 times a month. Why on earth would we steal valve stem caps? We gave them away for FREE if the customer asked for them.

My personal favorite was wiper blades. Our mark up on wiper blades was unreal. We would sell two new blades and charge $2.50 to install each one, and the blades and install would be MORE than the oil change and people would not even care. $65 for an oil change and wiper blades and they paid it like it was nothing.

Air filters, I loved trying to sell these things. You could pull one out and literally plant a garden in the darn thing and the ladies would ALWAYS say, maybe next time. Lady, you could plant corn in this freaking thing, it NEEDS replaced.

Or, the person who is a slob and brings their car in and wants us to clean out the 50 McDonald's bags and their traveling laundry pile in their trunk for them so we could even see the backseat. I loved cars that were trashed and their owners were always quality people.

People that bring a vehicle in that regularly carries 2 dogs and they expect us to detail the inside of their car and get ALL of the dog hair out. I loved arguing with customers on this one.

Free oil top off between oil changes... We had this guy that drove a mid 90s F150 with a 5.0 in it. Literally every two weeks he would stop in and get FOUR quarts of rotella 15w40 added. It holds FIVE and he would have FOUR added. He would drive across town with it knocking and rattling to get the free oil. We finally started charging him and he quit coming around.
