Guys, got a 2000 Exped, 5.4 Eddie Bauer. Got a slight ratchety so.und when cold. Changed fluids regular, it's got 90K, well taken care of. I now run a syn Valvoline. Need recommendations for wieght and type. Your advice it appreciated. I am open to any types, just looking for some expert advice. I have always put in the additive, Motorcraft diff additive at each change.
TYSM

^^^ yup.

Or, the Motorcraft fluid.

Make sure you put in the friction modifier. If it is still loud after a week, put more friction modifier in. My parent's took two bottles to get rid of the clutch noise in theirs, whilst mine only required one.

Ford requires 75-140 Syn ONLY in their truck diffs. I run only redline 75-140 in my truck diffs with 1 bottle of additve added to the gallon then mixed and pumped into the diff.

Didn't realize (or think) about adding a second bottle of FM to the diff. Good idea. I think I can get Redline at the local AZone here in Springfield, MO. Any other suggestions?

they want our techs to add a bottle of the modifier and then drive the car in figure 8's with chassis ears attached to the diff to listen for chatter. then they want them to add the least amount possible to get rid of the noise.

What if he has a limited slip? You need the friction modifier in L/S diffs.

The oil being synthetic has nothing to do with whether or not it needs additional FM.

Motorcraft synthetic 75w140 does NOT come with a friction modifier as it is used on applications that do not require it such as vehicles with open diffs or the level 2 4x4 Rangers with Torsens.

I am hearing alot of noise from my trucks diff to. The fluid I used said it was for L/S. But never added additional FM to the diff before. What brand is good and how much do you add at one time?

what is the application?

Many GL-5 Synthetics contain enough FM for clutch type limited slips, but some do not. Having a Group III/IV/V base stock doesn't determine whether or not the gear oil requires a bottle of FM, the amount of FM included in the gear oil determines it. The additional FM can be beneficial to open and gear type limited slip diffs as well, so many of the higher end gear oils already contain it.

I am running a TrueTrac diff (gear type LS) in my Mustang, and I will be adding a bottle of FM to Redline Heavy Shockproof (which already contains enough FM for clutch type limited slip) on Dave @ Redline's recommendation.
