Hi,

My wife just bought a new computer as the older one was not powerful enough to handle the software she needs to work.

She will keep her monitor and give the "old" computer to the teenage girls. As my contribution, I will give my monitor which is the oldest one in the house and will take advantage to get a new one.

My most demanded needs for the monitor is that I occasionally use Photoshop (I have a spyder device to calibrate the monitor). Other than that, no game, and basically just surfing the net and watching videos downloaded, Top Gear for example.

My video board is a NVIDIA GeForce 7900GT.

My criteria are:
- 24" 16:9 monitor,
- LED monitor for better contrast, clearer picture, and low consumption,
- At least HD (1920x1080),
- the cheapest possible, of course.

Searching a bit on the web, I found these two, both Asus monitors.
First one
Second one

What do you think of them?
Do you have better choices to propose?

Thanks for your help.

I have the VE248H. No complaints.

If you are a serious photochopper with calibration tools, you might look around for an IPS panel monitor. I have seen 24" IPS in the $260 range on special from Dell in the past.

ASUS makes nice stuff! the difference between the two you selected is that one has speakers and a DVI input; and the other does not. kinda up to you if you want integrated speakers and want a DVI connector (better video than VGA)

Make sure whatever you get has DVI, not all monitors have it anymore, and if your 7900GT is like my 7800GT, it has two DVI ports on it.

Thanks a lot for all the fast help.

Yes, the 7900GT has two DVI ports, so I should add that spec to my research, thanks.
But you can still do it with my first choice as they give a HDMI to DVI cable with the monitor. Is it as good as a proper DVI port on the monitor?

Thanks for all the info on the IPS panel, I did not know that spec either. I have a question about it, though: Is a LED monitor as good as a LCD with IPS monitor?

From what I read quickly, the IPS functionality brings about 400cd/m2 where a LED monitor is about 250cd/m2. But a review of one of the selection said I had previously a SAMSUNG 450cd/m2 monitor and when he replaced it with this one, it looks about the same for him.
I am not a professional photoshopper but used to use it quite a bit in the past. When I use it, I sure want to use it properly, that is why I have a calibration sensor, but then, correcting a photo takes a lot of time which is why I don't do it that much anymore. I am kinda perfectionist-but-not-that-patient type of guy.

Does anyone knows what range of RGB Adobe can a LED monitor give? A LCD with IPS claims to give 98% of the RGB Adobe spectrum, which is quite impressive.

DVI is the exact same digital signal without the audio channel that is included in HDMI. They should provide the same quality video signal and nothing would be lost in the DVI to HDMI coversion. Many monitors include the adapter.

An LED monitor still uses an LCD panel for the image, but uses LEDs for the backlighting instead of florescent bulbs. LED monitor is just marketing, because they don't call regular LCD monitors Cold Cathode Florescent monitors. The LEDs don't save that much electricity where it would sway my choice unless you can get a good deal on one, but LED doesn't mean better image quality.

I search a bit more on the IPS panel monitors and couldn't find a cheap one: They are at least in the 400$ range, and most of them more than 1000$.

I found this one: ViewSonic 23"

It is at the upper limit of my budget (OK, in fact, it is a bit more if you include the shipping) and only 23". But it is a Sony, and that is what I have now.
Looking at the spec, I don't see that much difference with a LED monitor: It got 300cd/m2 vs 250 which is nice but only 16.7 million colors like the others.
What is the main differences between an IPS monitor and a non IPS monitor?

At Dell.ca, I found this one too: Dell monitor

What do you think of it compare to the ASUS ML248H I found at Newegg, which the lead choice for now?

I am so lost, that is impressive!!

I finally decide to buy the BenQ EW2420:

It uses VA panel technology which may not be as good as IPS but it is a big step forward compare to TN.
And I was able to get it at the same price as the ones listed above (CAD$220).
BenQ is a well known brand for photoshoppers, like laCie, but I always thought they were too expensive for my budget (but cheaper than Apple). It seems for the last few years, BenQ decided to offer an entry and a mid level range to attract more customers,... lucky me.
Detailed deep blacks, here I come!

I should get it next week, and will report back to tell you what I think of it, if anyone is interested.

BenQ is just ACER.

I would probably have gone with an ASUS or Philips based on my experience with LCD longevity.
