There are not that many major oil refiners around....so Exxon Mobil may supply the synthetic to Ashland/Valvoline....and they add their own special add pack loaded with sodium to the synthetic.

After all....Ashland/Valvoline has to buy the refined oil somewhere since they do not have a source of their own....most of their oil could be supplied by Exxon Mobil.

Ashland Oil Company is owned by Marathon. There getting their oil products from Marathon, who is a large exploration company in oil and natural gas, they don't need to buy from Exxon.

I'd be interested, as well as others, to see that, in fact, Marathon owns Ashland.

They have a partnership. Both are still independent companies. Wikipedia sez:

Marathon Ashland Petroleum, LLC was a US based petroleum corporation, formed in 1998 from a merger of the downstream operations of Ashland, Inc., and Marathon Oil. Its corporate headquarters were in Findlay. Marathon owned 62% percent and Ashland owned 38% of this venture. [2]

In 1997, Marathon and Ashland formed Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC (MAP), a joint venture combining the companies’ refining, marketing and transportation businesses, with Marathon owning 62% of the operations while Ashland owned 38%. In the process, Ashland's SuperAmerica and Marathon's Speedway convenience store chains were merged together to form Speedway SuperAmerica LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of MAP.
When the merger was completed in 1998, the Speedway and SuperAmerica brands began to market together. In 2005, Marathon purchased Ashland's share of Marathon Ashland Petroleum, which became Marathon Petroleum Company LLC. At this time the locations outside the upper midwest were converted to "Speedway" and the "SuperAmerica" brand was restricted to that market.
Marathon sold SuperAmerica to Northern Tier Energy, a newly formed company backed by the private equity firms ACON Investments and TPG Capital, in February 2011. Today Speedway and SuperAmerica are unrelated chains.

Just gave you a little extra about what else Marathon Owns. Just google " Does Marathon Own Ashland Oil Company" it will give you far more choices to do your own research than me giving you just one link".

No one exclusively refines ALL their own oil... The majors sell base stocks to each other, private blenders etc. It's just the way it is.

Yeah if you like synthetic oil and 3.49 a quart looks like a decent deal.

But the real mystery is "Who supplies Ashland with their Base-stock oils for NAPA synthetic?

Is it Marathon
Is it Mobil
I doubt it is Shell...since they are direct competitors
Is it Conocophillips
Is it BP
Or is it whoever has the cheapest price at the time of need.

That is the answer we are seeking since we know that Ashland adds their own Sodium fortified Add Pack to all of their oils. IMO....the Valvoline setup is the same as Warren and Coastal....except that Ashland makes their own add pack to add to the base oils that they purchase on the open market.

i just went today and picked up another case from the store. 12/qts for $24 and sum change! bought 4 filters for lil under$20 bucks! helluva deal. its good for my 5-6k oci's and the napa gold and wix filters are all i use. the salesman today said they are still bottled by ashland and add pack from ashland but sometimes they pick up their base from whoever has the cheapest bulk bid. he said he seen sum of the bottles have the CCC on the bottom of the bottle and some have the P mark. sometimes the drums and 5 gallon buckets maybe shell/pennzoil or valvoline or mobil clean in the conventional. so mongo brought up a good point. by the way the silver filters are only $2.49/ unit but id rather put out an additional $2 bucks and stick with what has worked for me in the past.

How did you get twelve quarts for $24? I got twelve quarts for $42. It was $3.50 for me and the Napa gold were not on sale at the store I went to.

That is a great theory. I buy that for sure.

It's completely what's going on, Napa synthetic is Valvoline/Ashland products.

My first thoughts when seeing the pictures were exactly as chevro.

It took a lot of coffee to stay awake through the search, but big clues emerged.

Ashland 2011 Shareholders report, Part I, pages 5-6. It discusses their buying additives from Lubrizol in Deer Park, TX. That's about three miles from where I work. There is a Valvoline operation adjacent to the Lubrizol plant down one of those "private roads" we have a lot of. Then it goes on to say the source of their "raw materials" comes in part from Motiva in Port Arthur. Motiva is a joint venture between Shell and Saudi Arabia Refining. Of course, they have operations in every corner of the globe, too. But for us......

I had always known about the link between Valvoline and Lubrizol but now see a link to Shell base stocks. Sounds good.

Oh, by the way. After they tell us that a significant portion of their packaging comes from Graham Packaging, Inc. Note the "G" in that name. Possibly our G on the bottles?

thanks troberts! i went there to buy it thinking it was valvoline. when he said that i was like wow! either way its a win /win situation since both oils are great oils. i needed some clarification because it gets confusing sometimes
confused.gif
its a great proce and im going to stock up like armegedon on it. $3.49 /qt is an awesome price for valvoline!
