Hello everyone! This is my first post. I’ve read this forum and website for years and finally created a profile. My main daily is a slightly modded 2007 Mk5 GTI, 2.0T fsi, manual, that I bought new in Nov, 2006. I also drive a 2002 Chevy Silverado 5.3L, 4x4.
These VW cars burn oil, some more than others and I use around 6-6.5 total quarts per oil change and top-offs between OCIs (4.75 qt capacity). Just did my 80K service with Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40. This will be the 3rd oil change with it. Before that, I ran Redline 0W-40, mostly because that’s what the local RL shop carries, however RL recommends 5w30 on their site instead of 5w40. I did 3 OCIs with the RL, then did my complete 60K service with Motul VW specific. There was a night and day difference. The car seemed to absolutely shred that oil similar to the dealer’s Castrol. I went back to the RL and the car absolutely loved that oil and I got a good deal when I bought it by the case. However. I just couldn’t justify the price with the car’s consumption and thought maybe I’d try the PP after reading up on it and seeing the good reviews. Plus, it’s much easier to get. The car really likes the PP. I guess my thoughts would be that maybe these VAG engines like the slightly thinner Euro oils. Additionally, I use the Hengst cartridge filters. I like the more rigid end cap design and the media isn’t as misshapen when changed. What’s your thoughts on the GTL or Euro oils?
