got a stock order in which included FL=2021's (they fit V8 Lincoln LS and the newer T-Birds with the 3.9) and noticed that the boxes were shorter

so i took them out of the box and it looks like they just redesigned the filter and made the box smaller.

Uh....he's probably the one guy here who gets them from the dealership instead of Wal-Mart.

They're even cheaper at Pep Boys.

That's where I get mine. Doesn't Wal-Mart charge $4 for the FL-400S? They're $3.50 at Pep Boys, which is surprising considering how Wal-Mart is always squeezing their suppliers.

It just means that Ford can now stuff more of these in the delivery truck. Of course, their slant on all this is that they can save fuel by doing it.

this isnt as common of a filter as the 820 or 400 simply because it only fits a select number of applications. i have never seen one outside of a dealer, and whenever i go to WalMart or PepBoys i take a mental note of what Motorcraft they carry and for how much.

I saw 2 400s filters at Walmart in different size boxes and the filters were different height too.. not just the box change.

I contacted purolator about the size reduction on the FL-400S. They confirmed that they are still the supplier for Motorcraft. They didn't comment on why the filter size was reduced, however they did say that the effiency is still the same. Probably smaller can, with better media ??

I bought the last long FL400 filters at my local WM. The shelf space was empty for a few days and then they were replaced by the short ones.

Not to bash Motorcraft, as I use them also, but my guess is just a smaller can.
