I know..not approved. This car is out of warr and cannot get my hands on M1 0w40 and car needs a change before a trip. OCI will be 5k max. HM 10w40 is ACEA a3/B3 I believe. HTHS is at least 3.5 which is a big part of the 502 spec. I'm thinking it's ok, but would also be open to suggestions. Oil availability is scarce where I am now, so the usual flavors are tough to find. Any help is appreciated.

Disclaimer...I know about VW 502. I've owned and do own a VW. I'm not saying I dismiss the spec, but I also know there are oils out there that perform as good or better and are not "certified."

Thanks.

Is this for the 2011 Jetta? Hard to believe it is out of warranty, so must be a different VW. Can you get some GC or Castrol 5w-40 or RT6 if is out of warranty.

Thanks.

Whay do you mean oil is scarce? Has there been a "run" on the oil retailers? I don't understand...

Sorry. this is not the 11, but another 2.5. Where I am right now, selection is limited. Rural area.

Should be fine. It's thick enough and is a long life synthetic. The 2.5 has a huge 6L sump anyway.

5k? Figured I would get the "proper" oil and change it back when I am back out there. However, I have no issues with M1 HM. Seems like a solid product.

Agree that the HM 10w30 might even be better -- a bit thinner and I don't think you race the car or anything. :-)

No racing here...lol I'm not always one to follow the rules. So, I guess I have to ask if anyone has experimented in using a 5w30 syn such as PU in a VW 502 application. Just curious....

Audi Junkie claims Castrol Edge 5w30 (ACEA A5) is superior to VW502.00... he says so on VWVortex (as "Super Hans")

Since living in the boonies, probably have a better chance of finding a synthetic 5w40 diesel oil, ie Shell Rotella T6 (which I use on my 2.0T), CAT 5w40 (which I think is repackaged shell), Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck or Mobil Delvac 1 5w40....

M1 HM 10w40 has an HTHS of 4.0, so it's more than thick enough for a VW 2.5L. HM 10w30 has HTHS of 3.5, so it's right at the minimum for an A3/B3 oil. Either would be OK.

That may be, but I'm inclined to stick with things meeting or beating the mfg recommendation.

T6 and TDT are easy to find and cheap, those would work great if you're no longer under warranty.

Thanks...Looking at specs, it appears that HM 10w30 is actually thinner at lower temps. Am I wrong?

I love TDT, but from a cold flow standpoint, I might go with the HM 10w30. Good HTHS and a nice package overall.

TDT really is sub-par in the cold compared to most other 5w40s, and especially compared to 0w40s, 5w30s, 0w30s and 10w30s.

That clicking sound you hear on a cold start is just your cam... something that's greatly shortened with other oils.

Great info...Thanks Bob!

I did not realize that the TDT was that sub-par in the cold. I'll be making some trips to Upstate Vermont this winter and hope that the Shell Rotella T6 and Formula Shell synthetic are up to the task.

Based upon what? It still is a 5w- oil.
