That clicking sound you hear on a cold start is just your cam... something that's greatly shortened with other oils.

Based upon what? It still is a 5w- oil.

Based upon my usage of it over the years, as well as others I've convinced to try T6, M1 0w40 or a Euro 5w40/0w40/5w30/0w30. Below about 40*F the decrease in cam/lifter clicking and ticking from something other than TDT is noticeable.

5w defines a range. Some oils just barely make it into the lower bounds, others are just inside the upper bounds.

Look at the croptastic VI of TDT (153) vs M1 0w40 (185) vs. T6 (170) vs. Syntec 5w40 (178) vs. Syntec 0w30 (167) vs. Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 (164)

But TDT is PAO and that is the end all, be all fluid for cold flow, right??!?

T6 is "fake" synthetic, and cant possibly flow as well, right?

Id still like to see the actual value of cranking viscosity at -35C or whatever is the correct temp for rating a 5w- oil for comparison.

I have always been happier with cold startup noise on T6/RTS than on high PAO lubes in the cold...

TDT isn't known to be PAO. I know a lot of people thought TDT and Delvac 1 were identical, but we have no proof. They could have simply used the same additive package in different base oils.

Well then it should be like T6, right?

Im throwing out tongue-in-cheek comments here... FYI.

When TDT first came out, its PDS was the same as D1, so it was a great choice. Ive not looked at D1 PDS in many years now...

JHZR2 and Chevrofreak,

The CI-4+ versions of TDT and D1 5w40 (and probably the older CI-4/CI-4+ T&SUV 5w40) were identical, but since going to CJ-4 some years ago, D1 ESP 5w40 and TDT are no longer the same.

D1 ESP 5w40 sells for $35 to $40 gallon. TDT sells for nearly half. Same oil? Nope.

D1 always sold for ridiculous prices, mainly because of non-availability and typically being found only at truckstops.

I used to get my D1 from up in Canada, as it was the most convenient way...

I remember it being the same or a little bit more than T&SUV 5w40 and the old pre-CJ-4 TDT?

When an American has to come to Canada to get an oil conveniently, something is terribly wrong.

Perhaps we should amend NAFTA somehow so you can get D1 reasonably down there and we can get PU up here.

Back in NJ... the best source for Delvac 1 was Shotmeyer in Hawthorne, NJ.

Then they realized they have been losing a lot of money on their sales as they been selling it for the wrong amount...

IMHO, the non turbo charged engines such as the 2.0L and 2.5L used in the VW models will do fine with the HM 10w-40 or extended service 10w30. This is for warm climate conditions, The VW502 requirement is for all climates, therefore where sub zero temps are encountered, I would try to find the Mobile 1 0W-40 or the Castrol 5w-40 synthetics. I personally use the Extended service 10w30 Mobile 1 and change it at 8K. The engine does not need any oil added between changes as the level per the dipstick does not change. I stick with Mobile 1 and have used it on all my vehicles since 1978.
Seems like the Spec 502 oils are not as easy to locate at a fair price. Auto Zone in CA does cary the Castrol 5W-40 in individual quarts for engines still under warranty.

I work at a VW dealer. Whatever oil you use, just be sure it meets the VW spec for your car. Current VW owners manuals and the oil caps and sometimes decals under the hood are there as reminders. So far I have seen Castrol, Pennzoil, Mobil1 and Total brands available.
