I got curious and asked them, since Mobil 1 ATF used to say ATF-Z1 on it, but doesn't anymore.

This is what I got:

Me:
Hello, I have been using Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in my Honda. I notice that it no longer lists Honda, Toyota, or Subaru as applications where it can be used. Is Mobil 1 no longer recommended for Honda applications?

Mobil:
What is your transmission fluid requirement?

Me:
ATF-Z1

Mobil:
Mobil does not have a suitable product.

Perhaps honda automatics ceased to work on M1 ATF. I am interested in this issue more generally as I'm about to use the PZ Multi-vehicle on my wife's Odyssey.

That's very interesting....you'd think they would send out alerts/recalls or SOMETHING to alert those people who MAY have used it in Honda applications previously.....

BTW, anyone know what's up with the "For Honda and Acura vehicles!" Prestone Power Steering Fluid that Walmart sells?

are Honda and Acura that "picky" that they have to meet certain specs even for the pwr steering?

It's odd, because on the back of the bottle it says it's not an "authorized" Honda/Acura fluid....etc...etc. sort of "disclaimer" deal...heheh.

Jim,

I know a lot of Honda's that are doing very well with both the Pennzoil and QS Multi-Vehicle ATF's. I would not have any concerns in using it.

Yeah, I thought everyone knew that Honda's had a specific power steering fluid. You can use a plain PS fluid for top-off in an emergency, but you really should use one that is spec'd for Hondas. I have bought the Perstone stuff, but lately I just buy the PS fluid that Honda sells. Depending on your source, it may not cost that much more. Do a search on this forum or others and you will find the results from using non-Honda spec'd PS fluids.

Thanks. I thought you might have some knowledge about this. That puts my mind at ease. My wife's pretty easy on this van, and we don't tow with it as many of our friends do. We have a tow vehicle for that.

I'm not generally a "Mobil basher", but first they change the formulation of M1 oil from all PAO to...???...and stonewall about it. Now they've significantly changed the specs for their synth ATF and won't tell anyone why, or else give some ludicrous answer that makes no sense. Actions like these are why I no longer purchase ExMo products.

Mobil is to big to explain what they do and why. But, like any big corporate entity, the bottom line makes the decisions.

At $8/qt at AAP and AZ, they're not selling much either. And, with their not suitable for anything ATF, whats the point???

Looks like that there will be a run on Amalie, Maxlife, Amsoil, Redline, & RoyalPurple. M1's market share just dropped!

If you're using it, there is nothing to worry about. If you buy the new non-universal M1 ATF, it'll probably still work fine since its JASO-1A. If not, keep a bottle of Lubegard Platinum or Smartblend Titanium on the garage shelf.

They might just be worried about liability when an early odyssey transmission fails out of warranty.

Or maybe they never were really compatible.

Dummy, you said "not suitable for anything". I must say both transmissions in the Fords shift very good, up and down. Also you said their ATF isn't selling well. How can you know that?

The bottles are dusty at the local auto parts stores. Try to locate a mass quantity for a flush forces me to visit multiple stores just to dig up enough. And, it takes a while to reappear after it sells out. Ask your auto part store mgr and see what he says for volume. And, at $13 a quart, the layer of dust on Royalpurple is even thicker.

When you go for 20 applications(Toyotas, Nissans, Subarus, Hondas....) down to MerconV/Dexron, thats useless to me. There were 30 transmissions that I could service with Mobil1 ATF last month. Now, we're down to just GM and Ford. Not too many friends, neighbors, relatives, colleagues are buying GM.

I really agree with this! Since Honda has had so many failures with their automatic transmissions, as does or did Toyota, I think that Mobil wants to stay clear so that no one can come after them with claims of using Mobil 1 when their Honda, Toyota or Subaru finaly quit. I have heard my share of Honda & Toyota/Lexus auto transmission not lasting the test of time as they once did.

Here in the heartland GM and Ford sell very well, and M1 ATF sells great according to the AZ and AAP stores.
