My guess is that it's because M1 uses esters in their products and consequently they won't pass the tougher oxidation limits found in the 2018 update.

Actually, there are differences. Also, MB is using mostly Petronas now as OE oil.

Not sure about the US yet, but rest of the world, yes.
MB might still purchase oil from XOM here bcs. logistics. But Petronas is old story.

I think that FUCHS is supplier now.
Hmm, missed that news. If Petronas is still F1 sponsor, probably it is supplying oils to regular cars.
Fuchs might be supplying some stuff. It is largest German industrial lubricant manufacturer and they acquired Pentosin that was oldest lubricant supplier to pretty much all German automotive manufacturers.
