Maybe because although the oil may have changed, the physics of friction and lubrication have not.
+1 Also have the properties of varnish and sludge changed much? Certain products such as MMO and Kreen still seem to do a good job cleaning it, even after close to 90 years in the case of MMO. Some products still work, and work well when you need them.
