mixing PYB with PUP will give me semi-synthetic?

My local CT does not carry any more semi-synthetics on the shelf. Only Conventional and synthetic. I'm going to change out the FF from my new CX9 Turbo and want to go Semi for the next 2 changes and then PUP for the 3rd.

So if I mix PYB and PUP should I get a semi?

Thanks

What ratio are you planning on using?

50/50 is the worst way to make a blend. You should either have a majority of conventional or a majority of synthetic.

If memory serves Pennzoil Gold is 50/50.

Just wondering why you feel 50/50 isn't optimal?

The PUP is on sale now at CT stores. If I were you, I would just grab 3 or 4 jugs and you're good for 2 or 3 years. This oil can last at least one year or 15k KM. With the 10$/jug rebate, you're going to pay only 21$/Jug.

With longer OCI, I think, at the end, you're winner with only PUP instead of mixing dino with synth.

I personally think that mix will be fine, even at 50:50

However this idea of, not starting a new engine on a full synthetic, comes from the 90's when full synthetics were PAO and Esters. Most modern synthetics are now Group 3 based, with Pennzoil being GTL Group 3+ based.

Most conventionals are now Group 2 based.

Given that both Group 2 and Group 3 are both HydroCracked mineral oil, with just the treatment severity being different, I don't think either is much or a concern for a new engine.

Chevron make an IsoSyn semi-synthetic, which I believe is just a HC treatment rate, more than a typical Grp 2 but less than a typical Grp 3. Others make a semi-syn by mixing Grp 2 & Grp 3 together.

Just saying the old rules of thumb haven't kept pace with the modern chemistry / production techniques / marketing terms. Do what makes you feel most comfortable. Nothing wrong with going straight to PUP after the FF.

Can I go straight to PUP after 2000kms? I typically change out my FF at this interval with all my new cars

Sure - done early changes with Mobil 1 for decades - and look how many serious engines used that for FF over the years.
Going straight to Platinum is not a problem at all ... Enjoy the new ride !

Thanks to everyone for their input!

I had a new Honda motorcycle. Dropped the FF at 1000 KM and went straight to Castrol Edge 10W60, a PAO based full synthetic.

Rode the bike hard for the next 10 years, all on Castrol Edge 10W60, no problems at all.

I think most of the new wear in happens in the first few 100KM, so at 2000KM you are good to go. IMO

Curiosity got the better of me... why 5.1 qt? Why not just 5 and call it a day?
