I've been changing the oil in my 2007 Tacoma 4.0 every 3-5k for the last few years using everything under the sun. So far, no issues at all with 95k on the clock. However, I have found oils that sound better in the engine than others. I'm running 5w30 QS HorsePower and so far, no ticking but just a bit sluggish. When I tried GC 0w30 it sounded like I had put marbles in the engine. I will say that the best overall oil as far as performance and mileage goes has with no doubt been MC 5w20. So, I guess I'm lucky that it's inexpensive and goes 5k. Any other Tacoma owners out there use 5w20 these days?

This may make me re-think putting in the GC I just bought? Maybe it will go in the wife's car? You think GC will be ok in a Ford Focus?

I agree that MC is a quality oil, and I do not dispute your findings. However, a flaw in your analysis is that you are comparing different brands at different grades: MC 5W20, QHP 5W30, GC 0W30, etc. It would have been interesting to see your comments if all the oils tested were 5W30 and GC 0W30.

Thanks for sharing.

I am currently running 5w20 in my '07 T4R 4.0L, but it is of the PU variety......and it is the best oil I have poured in, in terms of smoothness, feel, sound and quick power.

Audi Junkie, you ought to see that last two, most recent UOA's of GC in 4.0L Toyota engines. It was horrific in regard to Iron and Lead.

I love GC in my Passat, but I would never pour it in a T4R.

As a loyal PYB user, I'd love to use MC, if my cars were spec'ed for the 5w20. Unfortunately for me, the 5w30 is more than my beloved PYB jugs around here, so that is what I use.

Great oil, great price. Use with confidence.

Not a Toyota but my 3.0 escape has a lot of tappet noise when the engine is hot and the colder the ambient temperature the worse it is (strange), I have tried several oils, in 5w30 and 5w20, pyb, durablend, castrol, syntec blend, Rotella T 10w30, and it always ends up back to the MC 5w20 for the quietest running engine both hot and cold.

Me too with a Mazda 6 with 85,000 miles on it. Seems very quiet that way from the very beginning I used it.

I've been doing the same with my Jeep, trying to see what quiets my lifter tick the best. I havn't tryed the MC yet, but I did try Q Torque Power (5w30) and it too quieted my engine down pretty good, but my latest run is with Kendal GT-1 Synthetic 5w-20 and it completely got rid of my tick, although now that I've got 3,000miles on it, it has returned intermitently. The Kendal how ever is made by Conoco, same as MC, so I'm thinking I might get similar results with that. If my tests with dino oil don't work out, I might just permanently switch to the Kendal or MC stuff.
