I participate in Walmart surveys (called The Mens Isle) and this one was out today. They are trying to find the best name.

That’s why Walmart is buying an additional $50 billion in U.S.-made products over the next 10 years. This means more jobs in local communities all across the USA. We won’t sacrifice on quality or raise the price. What makes this possible? The manufacturing landscape has changed. Labor costs in Asia are rising. Oil and transportation costs are high and increasingly unstable. And in the U.S, there is new innovation that makes low-cost production more feasible. So, when you buy a product at Walmart that’s made in the U.S., you’re putting dollars back into your local economy. Back into your neighbor’s pocket. And eventually, back into your own pocket. You’re creating jobs here in the U.S.Save Money. Live Better.

I'm all for it, but I really have to see any long-term effects. They had that program years ago (was Sam alive at the time?) and I believe it was more talk than results. I remember they had one program going where they made fishing rods using some sort of government grant and they were able to hire people at a sub-minimum wage. I guess that's better than buying the fishing rods from China, right?.
I honestly do hope they go with that plan, make it honestly sucessful and keep it.

They claimed last year or the year before they were going to slash prices across the board to attract more customers...guess what, didnt happen and their sales and foot traffic are in terrible shape.

I've actually seen plenty. A lot of stuff in automative, and cooking. A lot of the cookware and cutting boards, etc are US Made.

Produce and most groceries are likely US made. Still tons of Chinese junk. They can skew the numbers as they grow the grocery business in stores where they dont currently have it.

I wont be holding my breath, though I do hope it is the case...

Actually, this is how you should shop at WallyWorld.
Take a deep breath, go in and get what you need and get out quickly.

To be fair, my local WM has an excellent fresh fruit/vegetable market and deli for way less than name brand stores.

This is meaningless.

What matters is how much of their stuff is US made compare to other stores, not compare to itself in the past. If everyone is buying US made, there's nothing in particular that Walmart did that's different.

Did you hear Walmart will hire military vets with an honorable discharge within 1 year of leaving the military.

I don't know if that was just a publicity stunt to get some free attention.

It says buying $50B over 10 years, so $5B a year. Since it says "buy" one can assume its wholesale price. The numbers I have seen say Walmart takes in about $10K/second in sales (or $864M/day).

Thats a worldwide sales number, US only would be less. One might assume they would local source in some other countries also.

So basically 1/50 of their sales would be USA sourced.

Hopefully into quality jobs and not the typical low level retail ones. They are getting the cream of the crop likely using vets at retail level. If corporate and management level I give them kudo's.

That is a good and interesting perspective.

I think you know that any and all overtures to the public made by a for-profit corporation are pandering *for* *profit*. Patriotism sells, and Wal-Mart is beholden only to serving itself.

what per cent of their gross sales is that?
One other [censored] I have is that they wont stock the smae stuff like mens socks, they must keep changing vendors ever week, that means a different product plus they are frequently out of stock.

I think their sales are about $500B/year so $50B over 10 years would be just over 1%. Of course they'll buy US products if they are available at a lower cost than from anywhere else. I also dislike how Walmart is constantly changing their inventory and are always low on product.

I'm sure they would hire them for a corporate/management position provided they have the required education and experience for the job. However, just because someone is a veteran doesn't qualify them for a corporate or management position.

Doesn't surprise me. Between the "people of Wal-Mart" and the horrible looking stores around here we just stopped shopping hthere. It's also been proven their prices on average are no lower than Target, grocery stores, K-Mart, etc.
