I know this isn't the filter section, but figured more boaters would see this here, so...I'm guessing there is no reason to use a Sierra (or some other brand) marine engine oil filter vs. a Wix or NAPA Gold for my 4.3L VVP? I'm guessing marine oil filters just cost more for the "Marine" label, but do not offer any extra protection, relative to pricing anyway?

On my Volvo 5.7L V8 I got a great deal on Volvo Penta OEM oil filters, cheaper than Ac-Delco. I mean really, I got a steal. BUT before that I was using Purolator premiums on the boat. Im not going to give Sierra or Fram $8.99 for the SAME EXACT oil filter they are selling for automotive apps for $3.99. F-that.

I too went with an automotive oil filter for my VP 4.3L and haven't had any issues. My choice was the LF3554 from Fleetguard. It's the synthetic media version of the LF782 and what is really nice, it's the same filter for my 3.4L Grand Am. One less filter space on the garage shelf!

IMO, using a good quality automotive filter is fine. Everyone talks about how hard marine engines work etc, the oil pressure on a boat isn't two times as much as say a car or truck. 20-70psi is pretty normal for both applications.

The 4.3 IS a Chevy 4.3, with marine adaptations.
Most marine engines are Chevy auto engines converted to marine use.
Why would a 'marine' filter be any different that an auto filter?
If there is room, a longer filter is always a good idea, don't cost any more.

Bubba, can you explain the double filtration part? I always thought automotive filters just filtered from the outside in. I'm not sure where the 2nd filtration takes place....

The difference in a Marine Filter is they are
NOT a double filtration filter and have a heavier
can than a cheap auto filter and a silicone ADBV

Most marine filters are made by the same folks that make auto filters.
Since marine in board engines tend to run at higher rpms for longer periods, they may be more comparable to 'high performance' filters, or maybe racing filters.
Give up some fine filtration for increased oil flow.
