Major FUBAR at Ford

The Flex might be a monster up their in NYC, but compared to the fleet of Yukons, Tahoes, Explorers, and Expeditions that prowl the streets and backroads of suburbia and flyover country, it's a Prius.

Because 98.3756% of the time they will both be carrying the same number of people.

I cant speak for everyone, but in KC they are selling pretty dang well. All the trendy upper middle class families have one. They are really nice vehicles.

I've only seen one around here. Now Focuses seem to be selling like hot cakes.. see more of those than corolla's or civic's.

I counted 15 last weekend on my bikeride through my subdivision. That was just my subdivision.

I do see a lot of new 2008 foci, too.

I'm too lazy to look back and quote the post that quoted me, but I want to clarify that I'm not calling out anyone here with my Flex/xB/Element comment. Just injecting some wit and venting some frustration at the general idea that an idea isn't "good" unless the Japanese do it.

Like the general design of the Flex vs. the other boxes mentioned, or Saturn getting barbs for the center-dash IP on the ION while Toyota did the same thing in several models and didn't get nearly the complaints, and so on.

With luck, I didn't make things worse with this post. :D Like a friend of mine says, "Nuthin' but love"

I think all center dash binnacles are equally horrible. The Prius dash is kinda all over the place, but I'd overlook it for fuel efficiency.

What I don't get about the Ford fleet is why, generally, their models all seem to lag substantially behind their competitors in gas mileage. Take the Fusion, for example. Per the current EPA numbers, the I-4 Fusion gets the same mileage as a V-6 Camry; the V-6 Fusion is 3 mpgs worse than the V-6 Camry.

I-4 Cars: Camry 21/31 Fusion 20/28

V-6 Cars: Camry 19/29 Fusion 18/26

For the rest of the line, when you compare with various competitors, a similar trend emerges.

What gives with this? This would seem to be a very bad time for Ford to allow itself to lag behind in a critical performance measure.

let us not forget that the camry gets better gas mileage than the fusion while producing A LOT more power; especially on the
V-6 model.

It has 1/2 a litre more displacement. The Fusion 3.0L makes 221/205, and weights 3100lbs, the Camry 3.5L makes 268/248 and weighs 3263lbs. The math means that the Ford is making 74HP/L, the Toyota is making 76HP/L. Hardly epic. EPA for the Ford is 18/26, Toyota's is 19/28. Not a HUGE rift. But the pricing at the SEL and XLE level leaves a 3,000 dollar difference between the two, and likely could be made even greater, given the incentives and the like that Ford is offering right now.

The 4-bangers are very even power-wise, and coincidentally have similar displacements. 160/156 for Ford's 2.3L, 158/161 for Toyota's 2.4L.

That is only meaningful until you consider resale value. Then the Ford looks even worse unless you run them both until they are scrap value.

Dude, I'm driving an '89 Town Car and my other car is an '82 Capri

I think those facts are pretty self-explanatory, LOL! Ford's resale is poor for the same reason GM's and Dodge's is.

You are in such a small minority that the car companies don't even know that you exist.

They wouldn't even care that you existed if they knew it.

Oh, I know

My family tends to keep vehicles....... Until there is nothing left. And this takes a LONG time, given that we get them sprayed every year, and they are always well maintained.

Just in case there is any question, I think that is great.

Mine does. I have the Fusion manual four-banger with a custom tune and a larger MAF housing.
