You can't turn ON your gen backfeed socket with out turning OFF your main.
The plate slides up and down and only allows one to be on at the same time.

So in the example pic I posted you would turn OFF the main, slide the plate UP then you would be able to turn ON the gen outlet. The plate now blocks you from turning the MAIN back on until you turn off the gen outlet and slide it back down.
They make them for every major panel now and it most jurisdictions this is now an acceptable form of interlock.

That won't work in my panel because my welder breaker is mid way down the panel. Too far to the Main. I can simply lock my panel door closed while back feeding
so know one can access the box except me.

It isn't that it is physically incorrect. It just takes one missed thought to hurt someone. No one is perfect.

As with all things we have to be careful. Like I said, driving a car is inherently dangerous and we could hurt someone very easily with a missed thought while texting, talking, changing stations on the radio, etc. Backfeeding is safe as long as we follow the rules. It's all in the Main breaker.

Have you ever forgotten something? Mistakes happen.

Yes, even when you drive your car.

Same set up here. For a circuit that's not on the transfer switch I turn on a light switch and when the light actually works I know I got the power back.

True, however when I backfeed I have all the lights, garage door opener, outside dusk to dawn lights, TV, frig, all the wall outlets, hot water tank, kithen range, everything. As for knowing when the power is on, I just look for the neighbor lights if at night. Otherwise I simply turn off the gen and turn on the main. No problem.

All the companies that make breaker panels make the kits. I think there is only one company that makes an after market one. I will see if I can find them.

Haha easy enough. www.interlockkit.com
