Looks like I'm moving back to shelf oil

ON, Canada eh?
Amsoil just put up their minimum order for free shipping to $130 CDN and while I can go pick it up at the depot in the Greater Toronto Area (Mississauga - Tomken & Derry area for the locals) with no minimum, it's not really convenient because it's not on any travel routes I take so I'm going to go back to a shelf oil instead.

I was part of the M1 camp before and I have confidence in their products due to past experiences before Amsoil.
(Yes I know not all of their oils except 1 line officially MS-6395 but I don't care it's a B.S. spec from FCA that any quality SN/GF-5 oil can meet).

Sucks because I really like Signature Series but $130 per order is too much and makes it too difficult to expense at work because of invoice dates and amounts.

I will still use their other fluids though because I can usually do a $130 order no problem once an a while.

They really need to rethink the $130 free shipping especially when they are promoting yearly 25,000 mile (40K KM) OCI's with signature series and a typical oil change isn't going to hit $130.

I've never used Amsoil, but their model has seemed weird to me every since I heard about them. Sure they make a quality product, but are prohibitively expensive to most. When you do see them, typically at a farm supply shop, they aren't priced competitively which is even more odd considering the demographic that shops at that kind of store.

People make fun of Royal Purple (self included) for their flashy ads and marketing budget, but I've seen them be able to penetrate the market much more effectively than Amsoil. Amsoil has got to either lower prices across the board or get on more shelves where people are willing to pay a premium.

I would prefer a normal business model. Maybe in the beginning they wanted knowledgeable people to evangelize the benefits of synthetic oil. But not really needed anymore.

They need to adopt a normal business model.

I would most likely use EP because of the balance of cost and performance but it will depend on what the sales look like for that. I might just go with AFE if that is on sale more often (which I think is the case from the limited flyers I've seen here/there) and then do a UOA to see what I can run it until in my application. I'm not interested in running 0w40 FS. I'm not opposed to Vanilla M1 but usually when AFE or EP goes on sale it can be had for the same price.

I have enough Amsoil for the next change and I have lots of miles left on the current fill so I have some time to work it all out.

Pennzoil carries the FCA spec and is readily available on WM shelves. How convenient is that? And they have rebates! And like you say, if it meets the specs that's all that matters. My mother-in-law insists that's what I put in her car because that's what the dealer used.

I don't like Pennzoil's current synthetics (JMO) and my walmart is always out of it anyways. (Yes I've complained to their Head Office here)
I really hate my local walmarts. They are usually out of everything. Not just oil.

Always out at my Walmarts and similar price to M1 here not like it is in the U.S. or yeah I would just do that and change it more often.

Just curious what don't you like about Pennzoil?

I'll PM you because I don't want to start a war here with the SOPUS boys.

Im not a "SOPUS boy" Can I also get that PM? It may be something I need to know since I recently begin using a lot of their products on about half of my "stuff".

I like amsoil a lot too, from a product quality standpoint. Their prices have gotten a bit high, and I just can't see the value running it for 5k in my tgdi.

I'm going to move to M1 in my accord. Pennzoil is spotty with availability. Nothing wrong with it, just can't find it consistently. The M1 deal, ep in my case, is a great deal with the rebate.

PM me too if you don't mind.

Amsoil's US free shipping is, and from when they started it, always has been $100. USD. $130. CAD is the same (today's conversion is actually 133.30) so it's the same.

Is a $30 change really THAT bad to expense? Seems to me a quick chat with whoever processes the forms would suffice to push it through without drama - after all you drive a lot and went to Amsoil to save money with extended drains. That benefit is still there and if you illuminate the savings to them it shouldn't be an issue.

That said however I respect your decision to pay more per quart for an oil that might not go as far.....

Yeah the reason I'm not sweating if I can't find EP/AP at a decent price regularly and going with AFE is because the PentaStar isn't picky on oil and my dad's has run on conventional its whole life and it's still going with over 300K on it with the old filter/oil-pump/head design that has since been updated/revised.

For a TGDI, I would more likely run EP/AP instead because of it's PAO content for these higher stress applications. Not that AFE couldn't handle it. Just a preference.

I'd love to give some Amsoil products a try. They're thin on the ground in the UK with few resellers here.

Unfortunately I can't justify the cost.

Lets, for example use my Wife's little 900cc Turbo Dacia Sandero as an example. It takes 4 litres of ACEA A3/B4 oil in *w30 or *w40 flavour.

5 Quarts of Amsoil European Car Formula 5w30 - £79.82
5 Litres of Mobil1 FS 0w40 - £39.99
5 Litres of Valvoline SynPower 5w-40 - £38.08
4 Litres of Castrol Edge 0w40 A3/B4 - £36.50
5 Litres of Fuchs TITAN GT1 XTL 5W-40 - £26.99
4 Litres of Texaco Havoline Ultra 5W-40 - £24.99
5 Litres of Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 - £19.89

All quality oils with a number of approvals suitable for my Wifes car. Why would you ever buy the Amsoil?

By looking only at price point I agree. But consider that you can run the Amsoil perhaps twice as far or more, and the cost difference is more than taken care of.

Yeah it's the shipping costs to the UK I think that puts it at a ridiculous price. It's made in the U.S. which is how we get it at a decent price in Canada over US pricing.
