A mushroom is the fruiting body of a fungus. The underground network of the fungus is called the mycelium. Not all fungi have a mycelium and they don't necessarily produce mushrooms. See yeast. Can you take a picture of a specimen that's still nice looking?

It does look like a puffball but in decay thus it could be something else. I'm familiar with many edible mushrooms, maybe 15, and this is not one of the ones I'm familiar with.
