Started off with factory fill for first 3,100 miles. Lots of crud on the mag drain plug. Changed to Syntec 10w30 for about 840 miles then to Mobil1 10w30 for a trip around the block, then to Mobil1 5w30 for 3K miles.

Since this was all too schizophrenic for me, I switched to Kendall at approx. 7K miles on the truck and have stuck with it since.

Note: this UOA was of the GF-3 formula.

That is low iron but I get an iron of 9ppm after 6200 miles on Mobil 1 which is said to be causing high iron numbers. I have the magnetic plug which I think is the reason. However my last couple of changes the magnet was clean as a whistle.

GM uses a cheap ceramic magnet pressed into the drain plug - a few hot-cold duty cycles, and it's down to half strengh from marginal original effectiveness. If you wanna catch crud, get a neodymium magnet from the rotory "voice coil" head positioning drive from a trashed hard drive and stick it on your oil filter. Position it as far from the filter's bypass valve as possible if your oil filter has one to avoid interaction with its operation. (Don't worry - this magnet won't come off without a LOT of help.)

Hi,

Nice UOA!

I also had a UOA with 6 as my Iron on a 4.8 ltr (same as the 5.3 with shorter stroke) using Pennzoil 5w30 for a little longer OCI...

Not bad for .69 cents a quart oil

I don't have a Mag Plug in my truck (replaced with a Fram SureDrain) so I'm not sure how much it helps the UOA IMO.

My UOA is here if you would like to see it.

Take care, Bill

Geez...Bob W. and Bill. I have one of these engines (5.3L) and your UOAs are better than the ones that I have posted. The Kendall and the Pennzoil looked good. I replaced my magnetic drain plug with a Fumoto Valve which might be why my iron numbers were a little higher.

When I first joined BITOG there were not very many 5.3/4.8 UOAs, but now there are a lot of us. Nice results. Thanks for sharing!

Here is my first UOA using Kendall GT-1 full synthetic 10w30, 2004 Avalanche 5.3L V8, 3K mile interval.

Miles on truck was 22,630 at test, with use of a K&N HP-1007 filter and Napa Gold air cleaner. No make up oil was needed. Some light hauling (dump runs) occurred in this cycle.

Since I am too dumb to figure out how to post images, the first column is my unit, the second universal averages:

Alum: 2....5
Chrom: 0....2
Iron: 6....27
Copper: 44...83
Lead: 7....8
Tin: 2....2
Moly: 27...32
Nickel: 1....1
Mang: 0....2
Silver: 0....0
Titan: 0....0
Potas: 0....1
Boron: 1....64
Silicon: 7....14
Sodium: 2....9
Calcium: 2265....1367
Magn: 14...581
Phosph: 825...865
Zinc: 1220...1045
Barium: 0....0

Viscosity was on the low end of normal (60.2) but the flash point was decent (405), fuel was low at 0.5, no water and low insolubles (0.2). TBN was 4.6. Next UOA will be using same oil with a Napa Gold filter.

Blackstone's only real comments were that things look quite good and speculated that the magnetc drain plug contributed to the very low iron levels. However, I have viewed lots of other GM 5.3 (each with a mag plug) showing higher iron, so I am going to delude myself into thinking its the oil.

On the whole, I am pleased. Comments welcome.

I am beginning to wonder if 10w30 (or the even thickerer 0w30 GC) is a better fit for the GM motors than the 5w30. Your UOA looks very good as well. Good job.

Bob W.

Bob, you might run the oil the full interval shown on your oil life monitor. There was no reason to dump this oil. I think you'll find the NAPA-Gold filter equal to the K&N oil filter and lower cost.

Kendall is one of the four ConocoPhillips brands, Conoco, Phillips, & 76, all seem to be identical, and all good.

Bob,

I love the truck. It's been great and never seen the stealership since I drove away almost 6 years.

(I do have 2 recalls I never checked out. One is for a brake pipe hitting the automatic trans.. (I have a 5 speed manual.)

and the Tail gate cable recall.)

I'll have a 5w30 UOA sometime in Dec with it. I just changed the oil and put Mobil 7500 5w30 in it and will run it out 6 months or OLM, which ever is first. I am going to be going on a 2k mile trip in Aug so it will get some miles on it.

From my younger days I know that Kendall used to be a neighborhood brand, but the only place that seems to carry it are the Firestone dealers, who use it as their bulk oil.

I drive to the Sacramento area and get it by the case from an oil wholeseller. I get it for around 5 bucks a bottle. I once had a local Napa Auto Parts order me some, but the markup was too severe.

Best of luck.

Here was my plan: when I changed the oil I used a Napa Gold, and will plan to do an UOA to see what the results are.

Although I am one of the "die-hard" 3K mile fellows, I am actually considering stretchin it out a bit.

Thanx

Bob W.

It's nice to see an UOA with no additives mixed in the oil.

I also like the mag drain plug. I'll get one for my f150.

This report looks very good for a low milage Chevy motor. I think you can stretch out the OCI to 5000mi.
