2001 Jeep Wrangler 4.0L V6 with 33k miles. I believe the vehicle still has the original fluids in the front and rear differentials, transfer case, and manual trans.

My drive to work is about 7 mi of city/highway. Other than that, lots of other short trips, some joy rides, and occasional off-road use. Probably 12k miles per year. Climate is KY, so temps are typically between the teens and mid 90's year round.

I'm trying to decide between Mobil 1 or Valvoline dino. Would I get any benefit from Mobil 1 in this situation? Or should I just refill with Mopar?

The manual calls for.....
axles: SAE 80W90 MIL-L-2105C and API GL5
transfer case: ATF+4 type 9602

Appreciate any recommendations. Thanks

For best shiftin' in the transmission, I would recommend our MTL-R and HDS-5 for the diffy.

for your transfer case, I would recommend our MTFGlide.

Mola

I would recommend the synthetic in all powertrain applications because of the heat reduction and tolerance it has. I currently use Mobil1 75w90 in both diffs in my JGC and Amsoil ATF in the transfer case. I have the automatic so I am useing the ATF+4 there.

For yours, the simplest would be the Mobil1 75w90 in the diffs and transmission and Mobil1 ATF in the transfer case.

If you decide on price alone, then regular dino goes in all except the transfer case where I think you could use the ATF+3 if you wanted even though it calls for the +4.

Both my Jeeps (2000 Wrangler and 96 Cherokee) shifted smoother with Amsoil ATF in the transfer case (as opposed to the original fluids). I also use Amsoil in the differentials. The Cherokee has 150K on it with never a problem, and the Wrangler had 70K on it when I sold it a few weeks ago-again with never a problem).

I have been using conventional Pennzoil lubricants in both differentials, the transfer case, and the automatic transmission. I started using them around 30,000 miles. My 1987 Cherokee has close to 220,000 miles, with no problems.

"for your transfer case, I would recommend our MTFGlide."

MTFGlide seems like it would be the ultimate lube for a transfer case calling for an ATF. It would be the proper viscosity but have a much superior additive package to protect the moving parts from wear.

Any possible pitfalls? Coefficient of friction possibly too low? Any potential problems with the heavier barrier anti-wear additives?

I don't see any ... but I thought I'd ask.

I thought I'd bump this up.

Any potential downfalls for using a fluid like MTFGlide with higher levels of barrier additives in a transfer case calling for ATF?

I wouldn't think so. I would probably say that there's probably no clear advatage to using it. Most failures are due to chain stretch or blowing the thing apart putting too much torque to too big a tire (hard core use).

I'd have no problem using it

Trans- You have the NV3550 so I'd ONLY use the factory type fluid in it. This trans is pretty finicky when it comes to fluid.

Front/Rear axles- Any quality 80-90 GL5 gear lube. If you have the Track Lock rear differential, make sure you add the friction modifier to the lube. You can find it at your local Jeep dealer.

Transfer Case- Any quality ATF+3 or ATF+4. ATF+4 is a dealer item unless you live where they have a Murray's Auto Parts-they have it. If you are still under some kind of warranty, use ATF+4 for sake of argument.

Oh yeah, that 4.0 you have is a INLINE 6, not a V6.
