the burning NG sphere in the farm looked pretty ugly.

Isn't Fukushima the Hitachi unit with the blade attachment issue a while back ?

People often talk about "the big one". This was what they were talking about.

Hopefully Japan has prepared for something like this and can recover with minimal loss of life.

It'll be interesting to see how severe the tsunami is when it arrives in Hawaii and the west coast.

My sister said there was no damage to American Naval vessels in Japan, and all military personnel including my nephew are accounted for.

We still don't know about his fiance' and her family...

Some more on this:

But a commenter on that site stated the following, which I find interesting/reassuring.

Quote:
This is extremely weak journalism; get the facts before you attempt to release information. A nuclear power plant is required to declare an emergency for dozens of events that have nothing to do with control of the reactor or release of radioactive materials. Just the loss of off-site power mandates a declaration of an emergency, at which time they revert to using large diesel generators and banks of emergency batteries for power. Get the facts and then post the story!

Absolutely devastating. This is something that can totally destroy every infrastructure out there. Luckily Japan is probably the most prepared country on earth to deal with earth quake and even though the casualty is huge (1k from what I heard on the radio), it could have been a lot worse.

This is terrifying and terrible. This appears to be the worst natural disaster I've witnessed in my lifetime of over a 1/2 century. Seeing just three video, anyone would estimate the death toll will be in the tens of thousands if not a factor of ten higher. I am speechless. May they be comforted.

I thought "The Big One" was a hypothetical earthquake that would cause California to break off from the mainland...

In theory it would have been pushed further inland than off to the coast.

Sadly, I can only agree with you. I am sickened to think that the number of casualties will likely climb well into 5 figures but it just doesn't seem possible that it won't. My heart goes out to them.

Hawaii has a sliding plate from a isolated hot spot not related to the geographic Pacific Rim.

The quakes here can't compare...nature has it's force...
