Is this dented Fram PH8316 safe to use?

I didn't notice the dent in the can until after I got home from Walmart (even though I did open the box while in the store). Normally, I would just say no and not use it, but this filter is relatively hard to find. In fact, it's the only silicone PH8316 around. December 2017 production. This is the Zetec-spec filter with the anti-siphon valve.

Every other PH8316 in the area is old stock from 2015 at the latest. Nobody sells the TG8316 anymore, and the Walmart clearance TG's for this app are again old stock. Autozone has a 2017-production ST8316, but it's made by Purolator (yuck)

I'm considering ordering one on Amazon, hoping that will be recent production with the silicone ADBV.

Otherwise, I'll just order another Wix from Rock Auto (regular inventory!). That's actually what's on the car now, a 2017-production Wix 51315, purchased from RockAuto.

So, here are the pics. I tried to do my best to take a pic of the dent, but the suregrip black textured grip makes it hard to make out the dent in the photos (but the dent is much more easily visible in-person)

I wouldnt use it. Rural King sells that filter and the TG version of it

Not safe to use because you don't know how close the center dent is to the bypass valve prongs that stick up. With the siphon valve in the way. Even then, if it doesn't touch the bypass, who wants to chance stressed metal. I think you are over reacting to Purolator, lumping too much together, but that's my

I found this style of filter you chose to have possible problems with the end cap off center and causing pieces of glue to let go.

Good luck!

Yes, I have emailed Motorking about various issues in the past, but in this case he probably wouldn't know who exactly has a recent-production silicone 8316 in stock, and there is no way for him to possibly know.

Well, I'd want to exchange it for another, but there are no other silicone PH8316's in any Walmart around! I hope I can find my receipt!

Some would use it to do a cut and post. They would say, "Look at the quality of Fram vs. brand x. Fram comes from the factory all dented."

I would return at Wally and grab one without the silicon adbv.
Your engine will be just fine without this filter.

The cautious wisdom on these matters says the dent may react to pressurization and depressurization cycles.

Wherever the metal flexes repetitively due to these cycles is weakened.
Weak materials split.
Split oil filter housings leak oil.
Leaked oil doesn't help you engine.
You lose.

...

Yup, I personally will not use a filter with a dent.

Are you people that broke/cheap/dishonest you wanna pass the buck to another retailer you didn't buy it from? No integrity.

Even if it's broken-one OCI without filtering isn't the end of the world.

But for $4.00 (for another filter) I wouldn't use it.
