I used a Union Sanyo Oil filter for my 2001 acura integra. Well, i did a cold drain and NO oil came out of filter, but 4 quarts of oil came out from the drain plug. Hrmm, good thing i only had it in there for 3k miles.......anything to be concerned about? Normally oil comes gushing out from the filter area

Did the filter have an anti-drainback valve? If it did, it probably wasn't working.

This is a sideways-mounted filter I assume?

yeah horizontally mounted and its a replacement for Honda oem filters, so it should have one.

No concerns. I've done this before on my Hondas without issues.

And what in the world is a Union Sanyo filter???? I use PureOne filters and your experience is just like mine, but I've never heard of what you use. Just curious.

umm not sure, my cousin works at a shop and they stock up on these oil filters because theyre about 2.50-3 each. they're quite sturdy. that was my last one, i put in a PureOne just at first.

PS..cold drains ftw...oil smell isnt as strong, less chance of getting burn and it seems more of the old oil comes out

Yep, and the benefit of no oil spilling onto the suspension with Honda's genius design of having the filter DIRECTLY ABOVE a hollow suspension part.
I love Honda but sometimes, grrrr....

I don't see how oil is going to drain better when cold vs. hot.

Technically warm oil will be thinner, but this isn't really a problem with motor oil. For gear oil I might say do it when warm.

if its cold, that means the oil has already had plenty of time to drain down to the pan..i got 4 quarts out of this drain, usually its like 3.5 quarts. i put back four in and the dipstick is reading perfectly. 1 or 2 mm above top dot.

no more hot drains for me...cold will do just as well if not better imo.

I drain hot ... but let it drain over night. Max drainage in that case. If you drain cold, you're still going to have to let the pan drain for quite awhile to let the cold oil get fully out of the pan. Plus there is the cold drain factor when the filter is removed cold ... sometimes quite a bit of oil drains from the engine through the oil filter mount, so if the oil is cold, that could prolong that draining.

I could see draining cold if it was left to drain a couple hours or more.

Had that happen to me changing a FTG on my tractor. Put a NH filter on. Everything seems to be ok. It's a horizontal filter.

I've had them come off Ford engines with varying amounts of oil from very little to nearly full. I never worried about it.
