Installed an Odyssey Battery Today

My Johnson Controls battery is going on 9 years and still kicking. Paid about $45 bucks back then at Wallyworld (Everstart brand). The OEM battery lasted a little over 2 years and was a POS.

I started putting Optima red tops in about 4 vehicles that are not doing well. 2 were toast in about 5 or 6 years.

The last one in my car was leaking acid at the top lid seam just above the side terminal. It was starting to corrode the battery tray bolts. One of the main reasons I wanted to use the Optima is because they claim they DON'T leak.

I hope the Odyssey holds up for you. I was going to try them but I got sticker shock.

Remember guys the original poster is from Canada.

Most items are much more expensive than they are here in the states.

We have an influx of people crossing the boarder into New York to shop every second of the day.

A trip to a shopping mall in Canada really woke me up to this fact, their prices are high, and the taxes on those high prices makes them even higher.

This is coming from someone who lives in New York, we are one of the heaviest taxed states in the US.

Very well made battery. Last a very long time. Was going to put one in the z but got a optima for 100 bucks. Cosco batteries from my experience are very low quality. And this guy wanted a battery that will last him a long time, its his money and his choice. I think I should have bought one instead of the optima that's a really good warrnty and like the leak proof design.

Who makes Odyssey batteries?

Yeah, I figured that too. My $75 Interstate Mega-Tron Plus is good enough to last eight years, that's good enough for me.

The Costco battery in my Mustang is now about 4 1/2 years old. It still cranks over the engine fine but it has lost some capacity. I only drive that car once every week or two, so it spends a lot of time sitting around. I will probably take the Costco battery back and get a pro-rated refund on it and pay about $30 for a new battery.

Just wanted to revive this thread to advise those who, like me, may have given thought to using one of these in a GM side-post mount application... don't.

According to a number of reviews on the DieHard Platinum 34/78DT, the side mount terminal (adapter) is a prime source of failures due to "unbonding". In the pics I've seen of both the Odyssey 34/78-PC1500 and DieHard Platinum editions (apparently the same animal), the side-post adapter looks to be a rather make-shift affair - multiple failures of this component were noted after as little as one year. That's totally unacceptable on any battery - let alone one that costs as much as these do.

Drat - it is a heck of battery, but not for us GM'ers I guess.

I saw a pickup truck a couple days ago with an Odessey under the hood. I asked the owner as to where he acquired it and, it was in town! I was surprised. Definitely on "The List."

My old battery was 7 years old. All my spare batteries that I have around just don't hold much of a charge any more. Time to get a Military Grade Battery.

PHCA (5 second Pulse Cranking Amps) is 1750. CCA is 950. It's a deep cycle Gel Cell. Made from Pure Virgin Lead. There is nothing recycled about this battery.

I paid $330 CDN + taxes for it, list is about $440.

Optimas used to be good, but I heard that there's been a lot of warranty claims with the Optimas since Johnson Controls moved the manufacturing to Mexico. For the Odyssey, I get a 4 year free replacement and a 10 year pro-rated warranty. Can't beat that. It'll be a shame to get the battery dirty!

Now I just have to upgrade the battery cables. They're starting to get the corrosion from the inside problem.

I have one in my Santa Fe and it is sweet, but I only paid $225 + Tax from a dealer here in Hamilton.

Which one did you get Stevie?

And yes, that is a very quality battery. If low internal resistance and high AMPs combined with spill-less dry electrolyte, high impact resistance and high capacity capable of deep cycles with no ill effect means anything to you, then this is your battery. On the street, I can see this thing lasting 15 yrs.

KR-24 I think was the model Number... Something 24 anyways. It was heavy like a %!$# and expensive compared to a lead-acid battery but it's awesome I can't wait to test it out this winter!

I will snap a picture next time I'm under the hood for something and post here if I remember.

I will definitely get another one for my next vehicle.

I was thinking the same thing. That picture sure makes me feel the itch to run get my pressure washer. I'd probably be willing to PAY $100 for the entertainment of pressure washing that baby!

EK,

Krown Rust Control details my "under the hood" guts every year, and the inside/outside of my truck and it's cheap.

I usually get it done because working on the road everyday can make a mess of the floor mats, and other nooks/crannies.

I think I have a detailing thread on here with pictures if you want to see.

So not worth it to do it yourself IMO.

Odyssey does not offer any side post mount batteries??

I guess I'm one of the few who have had great luck with the Red Tops.
Granted, the last one which was still fairly strong when I replaced it after 8 years (it tested a little weak since I play the Alpine with the engine off A LOT!!, and I did not feel like risking the winter with it

) was the "old" style that many have said is FAR superior to the "newer" sold by Costco versions.

But so far (about a year, including the winter, and the same HIGH radio usage) this Costco bought Red Top has been excellent.
