by AOL article about saving 100.00 at the pump...there were some great tips

1. make sure you hear the gas cap click on
2. Properly inflate your tires
3. Replace your air filter every 6 months...mind you regardless of how many miles you drive LOL
4. Check you spark plugs all the time
5. Change your oil to Synthtic becuase you will gain MPG with it.

Just thought Id share these industry secrets with you guys LOL
it made me laugh

What if you have to go on a 3-day spelunking expedition under the hood in order to even find your spark plugs?

Then by all means do that. 3 days under the hood = 3 days of not driving the car = significant fuel savings.

Change a clean air filter? I'll pass. They don't get efficient until they get dirty, and acoording to SAE, changing air filters too often increases engine wear.
Besides, I don't have a carburetor. I'm pretty sure the computer mixes the fuel in with the air volume just fine.

Yes, wasn't there some experiment done that found a dirty air filter really doesn't cause a loss in MPG with modern cars because they adjust? From the carb days, sure, but not with modern FI systems and their sensors?

I thought the experiment was fairly well-done. Perhaps I'm making this all up. Ah, quick Google Search. Apparently Consumer Reports tried this on a modern car. So it was an experiment, with one vehicle. Take it as you wish.

But according to the video your air filter is your cars lungs and it wont breath good unless you change it....common guys dont you want to save 100.00 a month here. Ill try to find the link but i think they change daily so it may not be there.

Extensive experiment here: Air Fitlers & Fuel Economy

Lots more than one car and even one with a carburetor.

LMAO. Just imagine the earthly wonders that await you down in there!

I guess it depends on how dirty the air filter is.

Eventually you would end up with some pumping losses at partial throttle in addition to the losses from the throttle body itself. Assuming of course you can even get the car started with a filter that is that clogged. But I think to get it that clogged you would have to go more like 6-years. Not 6 months
