found it in the back of an chevrolet it was a 46 sedan. somethin rather..... it still works fine. it perfect for a project. whats the best way to clean it up?
 
What about taking a wire brush to the bad areas, then hit it with some of that spray on rust converter that turns rust black, like primer.

My F100 I bought back in 1977 had a three speed column shifted. I bet the tranny looked quite a bit like that one, except yours being from '49 probably is non-synchronized, a.k.a. a crash box.
